Label an AI background swap on a TikTok Shop video?

TikTok asks for disclosure when a background or object is added or removed in a misleading way. Keep the product itself unchanged and swap only the scene.

TikTok's guidelines list "A background, object, or person is added or removed in a misleading way" as a case where disclosure is needed. The trigger is the word misleading: a new backdrop behind a product that is shown exactly as it is differs from a background that hides a flaw or changes what the buyer receives.

The rule text is from TikTok's integrity and authenticity page, read 2026-09-30. This is not legal advice; check the page for your own case.

What does TikTok say needs a label?

The page says creators must label AI-generated or significantly edited content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people. It lists when disclosure is needed and when it is not.

How do I swap a background without changing the product?

Sume's image edit takes a source image and a prompt. The docs' own example prompt is "Keep the product identical; swap the background to a soft daylight studio", sent with image_urls to the Image 1.0 endpoint. Write the prompt so only the scene changes, then compare the result with the original before using it. See Image 1.0.

How do I turn the still into a video?

Video 1.0 has an image-to-video mode: prompt plus image_url as the first frame. Use the swapped still as that frame and describe light camera movement, not changes to the product. Details in Video 1.0.

Should I add a label anyway?

If a viewer could read the new scene as the real shooting location, a clear caption costs little. TikTok accepts a clear caption on the video as a disclosure option. Also read TikTok Shop AI video rules and product accuracy for the product-fidelity side.
