TikTok AI label policy: does anime or cartoon video need one?

TikTok counts anime and cartoons as AI content but says artistic styles need no disclosure. Realistic-looking people or scenes still do. The edge case.

Anime and cartoon AI video generally does not need a TikTok disclosure, but the guidelines get there in two steps. They define AI-generated content (AIGC) as any image, video or audio made or changed by AI, including artistic styles like anime, cartoons or paintings, and then list "using artistic styles, like anime" among the cases where disclosure is not needed. What does need a label is content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people.

Why does the page seem to say both things?

The definition says what counts as AI-generated; the disclosure section says what you must label. TikTok asks creators to label AI-generated or significantly edited content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people, and defines realistic-appearing content as content that looks like it could be real, such as AI images that look like real photographs or footage.

How does a prompt decide which side I land on?

Sume video generation is prompt-driven: the prompt is the "text description of the video to generate", so the style is whatever you write. A prompt for a flat-shaded cartoon fox is an artistic style. A prompt for a photoreal street interview is the realistic case. You can list models and their capabilities with GET /v1/videos/models. See Video generation.

What about reference images?

Image generation supports "text-to-image and reference-guided image editing", and reference URLs must be public HTTPS. A cartoon style applied to a reference photo of a real person is still a likeness question, which TikTok lists separately: a recognizable image of a person, including their face. Reference-guided output that stays photoreal is on the label side.

What should I do when it is borderline?

Add a clear caption or sticker; the page allows your own caption, watermark or sticker as disclosure. A borderline semi-realistic render costs you one line of text. See does TikTok allow AI-generated content for the wider policy.
