Shopify's Generate image: unsaved images vanish, so click Keep

Shopify's file picker can generate images, but unsaved ones are discarded unless you click Keep. How that differs from a Sume job result URL you retrieve later.

Shopify's file upload help says the AI Generate image option in the file picker discards images you do not save: you have to click Keep. That is a small workflow trap for a seller generating many product images in a session. Sume's image generation works differently, because a finished job has a result you can fetch again by job id, but you should still store the file in your own system.

What Shopify's page says

Per Shopify's help page, images generated in the file picker are kept only if you click Keep, and unsaved images are discarded. The page does not describe how many images you can generate or whether you can edit them afterwards.

A safer routine

If you generate in Shopify, click Keep on every image you want, and do it in the same session. If you use an image API, the job record is a convenience and not an archive, so download the file and keep it in a bucket you control, with a name that includes the product and date.

Shopify's Winter '26 edition also adds Sidekick image editing for backgrounds, adding or removing elements, and expanding the canvas. That is a separate, in-admin editing path with its own save behavior, so read its prompts before relying on it.

  • Name files by product, angle and date.
  • Keep the original packshot next to any edited version.
  • Do not rely on a job link as the only copy.

Limits

Shopify's text covers the Keep behavior only. Sume's docs do not promise how long result URLs stay available in every case, so treat any hosted URL as temporary until you have downloaded the file. Neither tool can confirm the image shows your real product.
