How to add a video to a Shopify product page
Add a video to a Shopify product page from the product's Media section: upload the file or paste a YouTube or Vimeo link. Your theme must support video.

To add a video to a Shopify product page, open the product in your Shopify admin and add the video in its Media section: click Upload new and pick the file, drag the file in, or use Add from URL for a YouTube or Vimeo link. The video shows on the product page only if your theme supports video media.
The steps and limits come from Shopify's Adding product media and Product media types pages, read on 2026-09-28. The last section, on making the clip with AI, uses Sume's Video generation docs.
How do I add a video to a Shopify product?
On desktop:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product.
- In the Media section, click Upload new and select the video, or drag and drop the file into the section.
- To reuse a file already in your store, click Select existing.
- To make the video the main media, drag it to the first item's place. The main media item is shown on collection pages, the cart, checkout, and your home page.
How do I add a YouTube or Vimeo video to a product?
Click Select existing, then Add from URL, and paste the video's page URL. In the Shopify app, tap + in the Media section and then YouTube or Vimeo URL. Shopify's rules for linked videos:
- YouTube videos must be Public or Unlisted, and use the
https://youtube.com/watch?v=[video-id]format. - Shorts URLs (
https://youtube.com/shorts/[video-id]) aren't supported; change them to the standard format. - Vimeo videos must allow embedding on external sites; use
https://vimeo.com/[video-id], not a custom vanity URL. - Video embeds work only with YouTube or Vimeo URLs. Any other URL you add must point at the file itself, so a Google Drive or Dropbox sharing link fails.
Why isn't my product video showing or uploading?
Start with the theme. All Online Store 2.0 themes built by Shopify and all Horizon themes display product videos; an older version of a supported theme may need an update. For a third-party theme, check its documentation or ask its developer. Shopify's file limits for video (formats, length, size, and resolution) are compared with generated clips in Turn Shopify product photos into product videos automatically. The upload errors Shopify documents:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Video uploads without a thumbnail and won't play | The file extension doesn't match the real format, e.g. a renamed .mov | Restore the real extension and upload again |
| Processing error | The file reached Shopify but couldn't be converted | Re-export or re-encode it in a widely used format |
| You can only add up to 250 media per product | The product is full; the limit can't be raised | Delete unneeded media |
| You can't upload more than 1,000 videos in a week | The store's weekly video limit | Try again in 7 days |
| Uploading 1 remaining stays on screen | The banner can outlast a finished upload | Check the product's Media section first |
Can I add a video to one product variant?
No. Shopify says 3D models and videos can't be used for product variant media, so a video belongs to the whole product. To place a video apart from the gallery, a File metafield is the other route, explained in Shopify product metafields for video.
How do I make the product video with AI first?
Generate a short clip from your product photo, download the MP4, then upload it as above. With Sume, send the photo to POST /v1/videos as a frame_images entry with frame_type: "first_frame", so the clip starts from your photo. aspect_ratio takes values such as 1:1, 9:16, and 16:9; each model lists its own in supported_aspect_ratios. Shopify recommends 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, or 1:1 for video. Most catalog models top out at 15 seconds; seedance-2.5 and wan-3.0 accept up to 30.
When the job is completed, download it from the content endpoint with your API key. The first-frame technique is covered in depth in Image-to-video API: first and last frame.
curl -L "https://api.sume.com/v1/videos/job_123/content?index=0" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
--output product-video.mp4Sources
