Shopify product image size and video specs for AI media
Shopify says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square product images. Request that size from Sume, then check Shopify's other caps.

Shopify's Help Center allows product images up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB, and says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best for square images; its developer docs cap images at 4472 x 4472 px (20 MP). To make a 2048x2048 product image with the Sume API, send image_size: { "width": 2048, "height": 2048 } to a ChatGPT Image model such as openai/gpt-image-2.5.
Shopify's figures are quoted from its Help Center page Product media types and its developer guide Manage media for products and collections, both read on 2026-09-27. Sume's come from the Image API, Timeline 1.0, and Video inspect docs, the Sume API reference, and Sume's image catalog code. Attaching files through Shopify's Admin API is covered in Shopify product video with products/create webhooks.
What sizes does Shopify accept for product media?
Shopify's two official pages give different image caps and different 4K video sizes, and the developer figures are the stricter ones. Both recommend 2048 x 2048 px, and the Help Center adds that featured images need one consistent aspect ratio to display at the same size on collection pages.
| Media | Help Center | Developer docs |
|---|---|---|
| Image size | Up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels | Max 4472 x 4472 px (20 MP); aspect ratio 100:1 to 1:100 |
| Image file | Smaller than 20 MB; PNG is best for most, then JPEG | PNG, GIF, JPEG, WEBP, or HEIC; max 20 MB |
| Video | .mp4, .mov, or .webm; up to 10 minutes, 1 GB, and 4K (4096 x 2160 px) | MP4, MOV, or WEBM; max 1 GB, 10 minutes, and 3840x2160 |
| 3D model | GLB or USDZ, up to 500 MB | GLB or USDZ, max 500 MB |
How do I generate a 2048x2048 product image?
Pin a ChatGPT Image model and put the pixels in image_size; 2048x2048 passes each rule of its custom-size box, as the table shows. Send output_format: "png", the type Shopify calls best for most product images. GPT Image 2.5 API on Sume covers the model's other fields.
The response's data[].url is Sume-hosted and signed, and Sume's authentication docs say to treat signed download URLs as temporary secrets, so pass it to Shopify promptly; Shopify's fileCreate downloads and stores the file itself. A slow generation answers 202 with a job to poll instead of the image body.
| Custom-size rule | 2048x2048 |
|---|---|
| Both edges multiples of 16 | 2048 = 16 × 128 |
| Maximum edge 3840 | 2048 |
| Aspect ratio at most 3:1 | 1:1 |
| 655,360–8,294,400 pixels | 4,194,304 pixels |

"image_size": { "width": 2048, "height": 2048 },
"output_format": "png"
}'Which Sume image sizes stay under Shopify's limits?
Every legal ChatGPT Image custom size stays under both of Shopify's pixel limits: the 3840-pixel maximum edge is below 4472 and 5000, and the 8,294,400-pixel maximum is below 20 megapixels. To keep featured images the same shape, send the same image_size on every call; n returns up to 10 images per call, with lower per-model ceilings in the catalog.
Other models size differently. Nano Banana, for example, maps a pixel image_size to one of its native aspect ratios instead of drawing those pixels; AI image aspect ratios and custom sizes covers each model's rule. Whatever the model, check each file against Shopify's 20 MB limit before you upload.
Which Sume videos fit Shopify's video limits?
In browsers that support streaming, Shopify plays product videos at 480p, 720p, or 1080p, depending on the viewer's connection and the upload's resolution. A Timeline 1.0 render at 1920x1080, or at its default 1080x1920, stays within both pages' 4K caps and writes MP4, one of the three video types Shopify accepts. Timeline renders up to 1800 seconds, past Shopify's 10 minutes, so keep audio.duration_seconds at 600 or less.
For a generated clip, such as seedance-2.5 at 1080p, the docs name the resolution tier but not the pixel size. Read width, height, duration_seconds, and size_bytes from an unbilled POST /v1/video-inspect with frames: false, and compare them with Shopify's caps before you upload.
What can't Sume make for a Shopify product page?
Two parts of Shopify's product media are out of reach today:
- 3D models. Shopify's 3D slot takes GLB or USDZ files, and Sume's generation families are avatar, image, video, and music.
- Assembled 4K video. Timeline and video trim cap each output edge at 2160 pixels, below 3840x2160 and 4096x2160.
