TikTok in-feed ad file types: MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP or AVI?

TikTok's non-Spark in-feed ads accept five file types, Spark only .mp4 or .mov. Sume trim returns MP4, so a trimmed AI clip fits both.

TikTok's Auction In-Feed Ads page lists .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp and .avi for non-Spark ads and only .mp4 or .mov for Spark Ads. A Sume video-trim job returns a new MP4, which sits in both lists, so MP4 is the format to standardise on.

The lists come from TikTok Auction In-Feed Ads | TikTok Ads Manager, read 2026-10-02. The Sume side is Video trim and Jobs and results.

Which formats does each ad type take?

The Spark row is shorter, and that is the one that bites if you export to something exotic.

What does Sume hand back?

Video trim's doc says it returns "a new MP4 artifact" with kind: video_trim and a video_url. Exact mode re-encodes with libx264 in yuv420p and remuxes kept audio as AAC; keyframe mode is a stream copy. In both cases the container is MP4.

Sume's other video surfaces (generation, captions) are documented as returning a captioned or generated video URL; I did not find a statement of container for each, so for anything but trim, check the video_url extension in the result.

curl https://api.sume.com/v1/jobs/job_123/result \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY"

When would I need another format?

If your source is .webm, which TikTok's ad page does not list, trim it with Sume first and use the MP4 it returns. Sume's video-trim requires a media.sume.com source, so import the file with POST /v1/media-imports before trimming, and note that trim rejects non-video sources with unsupported_media_type.

Sume has no .mov, .mpeg, .3gp or .avi output option in the trim docs, so if you specifically need one of those, convert elsewhere.

Does the format fix the other specs?

No. Format is one row. Ratio, size, bitrate and duration are separate, and for non-Spark ads the page lists a 500 MB cap and 516 kbps minimum; see the sibling posts on bitrate and in-feed specs.
