Advantage+ background generation for catalog ads: Meta's 2-3% claim
Meta says background generation for catalog ads lifted conversions 2-3%. You can turn it off; to control the scene yourself, edit the product shot on Sume.

Meta's Advantage+ creative page says background generation for catalog ads drove a 2-3% lift in conversions, and that enhancements can be turned off at any time (read 2026-10-02). If you want to choose the backdrop yourself, edit the product photo on Sume and upload that as the creative.
What Meta says
The page says Advantage+ creative runs in Ads Manager during campaign setup, covers single image, video and carousel formats, shows previews and marks AI-generated features with an AI logo. It also says the features are reachable through the Marketing API, with opt-in, opt-out and previews supported (read 2026-10-02). The conversion numbers are Meta's own claims, not something I tested.
| Item | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| Catalog backgrounds | 2-3% lift in conversions |
| Reels video expansion | 2% lift in conversions |
| Control | Enhancements can be turned off at any time |
| Preview | Preview before publishing |
| API | Marketing API supports opt-in, opt-out and previews |
Make the backdrop yourself
Sume's Image API accepts reference images and an edit prompt. The docs example for an edit says to keep the product identical and swap the background to a soft daylight studio (Image 1.0). ChatGPT Image 2.5 on Sume also takes an optional mask and a background setting of auto, transparent or opaque (Image API).
- Send the real product photo as the reference.
- State what must not change: shape, label text, color.
- Compare the output to the original at full size before use.
- Disclose AI edits where the platform asks; a misleading product shot can break rules.
Which to pick
Use Meta's generation when you want quick variants inside the ad flow. Use your own edit when the backdrop is part of a campaign look or when a product must match packaging exactly. Our guide to turning Advantage+ enhancements off covers the opt-out side.
