Instagram Close Friends Reels: Test a Sume Clip Before Going Public

Instagram lets you share a Reel with Close Friends only, with no notice when the list changes. Use it to check a Sume-made vertical clip before posting.

What are Close Friends Reels?

Instagram's Reels tips page says you can share a Reel with Close Friends only, which restricts the audience. It says the option works for public and private accounts, and that updating the Close Friends list does not send notifications. I read the page on 2026-10-03. The same page lists up to 5 collaborators on a Reel, music captions (lyrics), templates, voice-over so you need not appear on camera, and photo slideshows with music and effects.

Why use it as a preview?

A phone is the best test of a vertical edit. Caption size, music level and the cut all look different on a handset than in an editor. A small audience lets you check those without committing to the public post. The page frames the feature as audience control, not as a testing tool; using it for review is my suggestion, not Meta's.

What do I check with Sume's output?

Make the clip with video trim at 9:16 ($0.02 per job) and burn captions with POST /v1/video-captions ($0.20 per job), then watch the Close Friends version for three things: do captions clear the lower interface area, is the music under the voice, and does the first second hold attention? Instagram's own Reels page says longer reels are promoted less, so check the cut length too.

  • Caption size and position on the phone.
  • Music level against speech.
  • The first second of the hook.

What do I do with the feedback?

Fix one thing at a time. A caption tweak is a new caption job; a pacing change is a new trim. Because Sume's caption endpoint can restyle with source_caption_id without a second speech-to-text pass, a style change is cheaper than starting over.
