Instagram Instants are photo-only: what that means for Reel teasers
Instagram Instants share expiring photos with Close Friends or mutuals, not video. What Instagram's page says, and how to pull a still from a Reel with Sume.

Instagram's announcement describes Instants as photos shared with Close Friends or mutuals that disappear once seen and expire after 24 hours; it mentions no video, no Reels and no links. So an Instant cannot carry a Reel. If you want a teaser, the closest thing is a still from the Reel, which you can extract with Sume's video frames route.
Everything about Instants here comes from Instagram's Introducing Instants, read on 2026-10-03; the announcement is dated May 13 in the page's own text.
What does Instagram say Instants are?
The page says you share photos with Close Friends or mutuals, meaning followers you follow back. Instants disappear after recipients view them, can't be screenshot or screen-recorded, and cannot be seen after 24 hours. Captions are added before sharing, unlike Stories. There is an undo button right after sharing, a private archive for up to a year, recaps you can compile for Stories, and a way to snooze stacks.
A separate Instants app is rolling out in select countries on iOS and Android. The page ties Instants into Teen Accounts and parental supervision, with shared time limits and Sleep Mode from 10 PM to 7 AM. It makes no AI-generation or labeling statement.
Does that make Instants a Reels channel?
No. The announcement does not describe any publishing API, ad placement, analytics or scheduling for Instants, and it does not say whether you can pick a photo from your library rather than take one in the camera. Do not plan an automated pipeline around it; there is nothing in the announcement to build on.
| Question | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Video or Reels? | Not mentioned; photos only |
| Audience | Close Friends or mutuals |
| Lifetime | Disappears after viewing; gone after 24 hours |
| Screenshots | Can't be screenshot or screen-recorded |
| Upload from library | Not stated |
| Ads or API | Not stated |
How do I pull a still from a Reel?
If you want a picture from a finished Reel, Video frames takes one clip on the Sume media host and a list of times in seconds, then returns durable image files at the source size. You can send 1 to 24 times, and each must fall between 0 and the clip length. Use format: "png" for a lossless still. The route is always async: it returns 202, and you read the result from GET /v1/video-frames/:id.
Then post the still yourself in the app. Sume does not post to Instants.
curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-frames \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Idempotency-Key: reel-still-001" \
-d '{
"video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/reel.mp4",
"at": [1.5, 6],
"format": "png"
}'What should I think about before posting?
An Instant goes to people who already follow you and are close to you, so a teaser works as a nudge to a small circle, not as reach. Because the page says nothing about library uploads, test whether you can use an extracted still before relying on it. Poll the job as described in Jobs and results.
