Bulk-generating Shorts from templates after YouTube's update

YouTube named template-based bulk changes as not original. A self-audit of a Sume batch workflow: what to vary per item, and what a bulk run cannot fix.

Bulk-generating Shorts is not banned, but YouTube's October 2026 recommendation change lists "template-based bulk changes" among edits that do not make a reused clip original (Search Engine Journal, read 2026-10-03). That sentence was about reused clips from other creators. For channels making their own AI videos, the closest written rule is YouTube's monetization policy, which says content should not be mass-produced, generic or repetitive (read 2026-10-03). So the safe use of a batch is many distinct inputs through one pipeline, not one input with 50 cosmetic variants.

Self-audit a batch

Look at the rows you feed a batch, not at the pipeline. If the rows are different ideas, scripts or source footage, the batch is production capacity. If the rows differ only in a swapped color or caption font, it is template output.

What a Sume bulk run is

A bulk run is a server-side queue of ordinary Format runs: POST /v1/formats/{handle}/{slug}/bulk-runs with concurrency from 1 to 16 and 1 to 100 items, each the same body as a single run. It handles throughput. It does not judge the content of the items, and completed means every item is terminal, not that all succeeded; read counts.failed. Each item can carry its own instruction and input, which is where per-item substance belongs.

A practical limit

Cap batches at what you could defend as separate ideas. If you can fill 100 rows with 100 real scripts, run 100; if you can fill 12, run 12. See what to vary per row for the per-row checklist, and the Format API Bulk runs page for queue mechanics.
