AI Notion page cover: 1500 px wide, plus a 280 px icon

Notion recommends covers at least 1,500 px wide and uploaded icons around 280x280. How to make both with the Sume image API: ratios, prices and a request.

Notion says its cover images change with the width of your window, so there is no single best size, but it recommends at least 1,500 pixels wide; uploaded icons should ideally be 280x280. For the cover, ask Sume for a very wide ratio such as 4:1 on Nano Banana 2 at the 2K tier ($0.15 per image; $0.10 at 1K) and keep the subject in a middle band. For the icon, make a 1:1 render and resize it.

What Notion says

Both figures below come from Notion's help page (read 2026-10-03). The page gives no file-size limit, so this post does not state one.

Choose a wide ratio

Because the cover is cropped to the window, a wide ratio with the subject in the middle survives most window shapes. The Sume catalog lists these wide ratios (read 2026-10-03): Nano Banana 2 lists 4:1 and 8:1; Ideogram V3 and 4.5 list 3:1; Grok Imagine, Qwen Image, Flux 2, Recraft V4 and the two Ideogram rows list 2:1; Imagen and Seedream stop at 16:9 and 3:2. GPT Image 2.5 takes custom pixels up to a 3:1 ratio, with both edges multiples of 16 and 655,360 to 8,294,400 pixels.

Nano Banana 2 is the simplest choice at 4:1 because it also lists resolution tiers 0.5K, 1K, 2K and 4K. Ask for 2K so a 4:1 image is comfortably over 1,500 pixels wide, and read the returned width to confirm.

A cover request

This asks for a calm wide scene with the focal point in the middle band. The docs describe 200 as the image body and 202 as a job you poll.

curl -s https://api.sume.com/v1/images \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "google/nano-banana-2",
    "prompt": "wide calm landscape of paper-cut hills at dusk, soft gradient sky, focal point in the center band, empty space top and bottom, no text",
    "aspect_ratio": "4:1",
    "resolution": "2K",
    "output_format": "jpeg"
  }'

Make the icon separately

Do not crop the icon from the cover. Make a 1:1 render, then resize to 280x280. If you want the icon on a transparent ground so it sits well on any page color, use openai/gpt-image-2.5 with background: "transparent" and output_format: "png", a medium-quality estimate of $0.0165 per image.

Keep words out of both pictures. OpenAI's image guide says its models can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity, so put page titles in Notion itself.

What Sume does not do

Sume does not upload to Notion or know your page layout; you download the file and add it as a cover. Failed generations are not billed, so a retry costs nothing extra.
