Omni is free in YouTube Shorts: when you need the API instead
Google rolls Omni Flash out free in YouTube Shorts and Create and to Gemini subscribers; the API bills per second. Where the free tools stop and an API starts.

Google's launch post says Gemini Omni Flash is available free in YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create, and in the Gemini app and Flow for AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers. It does not say those are API rights. The Gemini API bills Omni at about $0.10 per second at 720p. Use the free tools for one-off creator videos; use an API when you need batches, repeatable settings, or files you control.
Side by side
The rollout is from Google's announcement, the price from the pricing page, and the API limits from the Omni guide.
| Route | Who can use it | How it is billed | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts and Create | Free, per the announcement | No per-clip charge stated | In-app prompts |
| Gemini app and Flow | AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers | Subscription | App or Flow |
| Gemini API | Developers with a billing account | About $0.10 per 720p second | Full request: task, resolution, references |
What the free tools do not give you
The API lets you script 3 to 10 second clips at chosen resolutions, upload references and edit sources of up to 10 seconds, and receive files programmatically. The in-app routes are tuned for single creators, and the pages I read do not promise batch, automation or a commercial-use guarantee for them. I did not read the YouTube terms, so check them before you rely on an in-app clip for client work.
Where Sume fits
Sume offers the batch side. The Video Router takes Omni jobs at provider list times 1.25 per output second, and Timeline 1.0 assembles clips with a voiceover and transitions at $0.10 per output minute. It costs more per second than Google direct; what you get is a queue, idempotent submits and URLs you keep. If you only make one Short a week, the free tool is the better deal.
