Under YouTube's September 2026 update, graphic gaming content in seconds 8 to 15 will earn ad revenue, while graphic gaming content in the first seven seconds stays ineligible. Sume can show you what the opening seconds contain and cut a clip to start later; whether a video is eligible is YouTube's call, not Sume's.

The guideline text is from YouTube's advertiser-friendly updates page (read 2026-10-01); tooling facts from the Video frames and Video trim docs.

What does the update say?

It is an update to the Violent Content guidelines, listed under September 2026. It clarifies that content featuring graphic gaming content in the first eight to fifteen seconds will earn ad revenue, and that graphic gaming content in the first seven seconds will continue to be ineligible. The page does not define "graphic" beyond the Violent Content guidelines it points to, so read those before you decide what to cut.

How do I look at the first seven seconds?

POST /v1/video-frames extracts stills at times you name. Pass exactly one of at[] (1 to 24 values, each at least 0) or fps. Stills are unbilled, and the clip must already be on media.sume.com; import it with POST /v1/media-imports first. You then review the images yourself.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-frames \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: gaming-open-001" \
  -d '{
    "video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/gameplay.mp4",
    "at": [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
  }'

How do I start the clip later?

Use POST /v1/video-trim with start set past the moment you want gone, plus end or duration. The result is a new MP4 and the source is untouched. Trimming changes what the video opens with; it does not reorder content, so for a different order you would assemble clips with Timeline.

Does cutting guarantee ad revenue?

No. Sume does not judge monetization, and this update covers only graphic gaming content in the opening seconds. Other guidelines still apply to the whole video. A neighbouring explainer is how YouTube counts Shorts views.
