A Shorts view counts each time a Short starts to play or replays, with no minimum watch time. YouTube says it changed the count on 3/31/2025. The older view metric still exists in YouTube Analytics under the name Engaged views.

Everything about YouTube below is from its help page Upload YouTube Shorts, read 2026-09-29. The Sume part is from the Timeline 1.0 docs.

What is the difference between views and engaged views?

YouTube gives a reason for the change: it says counting starts and replays gives creators a more complete view of how their short videos are doing, especially when they share content on different platforms. Engaged views stays in YouTube Analytics so you can see how many viewers chose to continue watching, and to compare performance across all your Shorts.

From YouTube Help, Upload YouTube Shorts, read 2026-09-29.
MetricWhat the page says it counts
Views (from 3/31/2025)The number of times a Short starts to play or replays, with no minimum watch time
Engaged viewsThe existing Shorts view metric, kept in YouTube Analytics: how many viewers chose to continue watching

Why might a Short's view count look different from before?

Because the two numbers answer different questions. The plain view count includes every start and replay, with no minimum watch time. Engaged views counts how many viewers chose to continue watching. YouTube tells you to use Engaged views in YouTube Analytics when you compare performance across all of your Shorts.

Did the change affect monetization?

Not directly, per the page. YouTube says the change does not directly affect YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility or Shorts ad revenue sharing, because both are based on "Engaged Shorts views", so eligibility and earnings do not change.

The same page gives the Shorts route into YPP: you must gain 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. It states no other threshold, so check YouTube's YPP page for the other eligibility routes.

What upload limits apply to a Short?

Two more numbers on the same page matter when you prepare a file: a title of at most 100 characters, and a maximum resolution of 1080p. For a vertical Short, 1080x1920 matches that limit.

The page also says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long. For how YouTube decides what counts as a Short, see YouTube Shorts video specs.

How do I render a Short at 1080x1920 with Sume?

Sume's Timeline 1.0 renders 1080x1920 MP4 by default and accepts output edges from 256 to 2160, so nothing here requires a render above 1080p. Sume renders the file only; you upload it in the YouTube app or Studio, and the counts above come from YouTube Analytics.
