Auto-select creative assets missing in TikTok Ads Manager? Why
TikTok limits auto-selected creatives to Smart+ app promotion and select lead gen advertisers; a July notice widens lead gen. Check, then self-supply.

The Auto-select creative assets pencil icon only appears for a narrow set of campaigns. TikTok's help page says auto-selected creatives are available only for app promotion (app install, app retargeting, app pre-registration) and for lead generation for select customers, and only inside Smart+ campaigns. If your campaign is a different objective, a non-Smart+ campaign, or an account that is not on the list, the option will not be there.
TikTok's July 28, 2026 Product Preview says Auto-Selection is now available for Lead Generation campaigns. The help page, last updated April 2026, still says select customers. TikTok does not reconcile the two on the pages read, so treat your Ads Manager screen as the answer. Both pages were read on 2026-10-02.
What does TikTok say you need?
The Product Preview lists the new Lead Generation availability next to Sales and Growth Max, which suggests the objective list is moving. The Preview's own availability notes cover other products, not this one, so it gives no account-level answer.
| Requirement | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Ad objective | App promotion (install, retargeting, pre-registration); lead generation for select customers |
| Campaign type | Smart+ campaigns only |
| Regions | Global |
| Customers | All app and gaming industry advertisers; select lead generation advertisers |
Where is the control in the campaign flow?
Per TikTok's how-to page: create a campaign with a supported objective and the Smart+ type, finish campaign and ad group settings, then in ad settings select the pencil icon next to Auto-select creative assets. A Switch to custom selection link at the top right of the asset menu opts you out.
What if I do not have it?
Then the rotation is yours to supply. Upload several vertical clips and choose them yourself. Sume's avatar video endpoint makes a talking clip from a script in one request: aspect_ratio defaults to 9:16, the target duration must estimate at 4 to 60 seconds, and optional captions burn into the MP4. Run one request per opening line and keep the body the same.
If your account does have the option, the same clips can sit under Your own content as the pool you control. What to upload for Auto-Selection covers that case.
What should I not assume?
Three assumptions that the pages do not support:
- That a missing icon is a bug. Check objective, Smart+ and eligibility first.
- That the July preview overrides the help page for your account. It does not say so.
- That any third-party tool can switch the option on. The help page describes it as an Ads Manager setting.
