Shopify image max 4472 x 4472 px: what Sume's image API outputs

Shopify.dev caps product images at 20 MB and 4472 x 4472 px. gpt-image-2.5 on Sume stops at a 3840 edge and 8,294,400 pixels, so it sits under the pixel cap.

Shopify's product media page lists a maximum image of 4472 x 4472 pixels (20 MP) and 20 MB. Sume's openai/gpt-image-2.5 custom image_size stops at a 3840 pixel edge and 8,294,400 total pixels, so a request cannot exceed Shopify's pixel limit; file size is the one to check after download.

What does Shopify list for images?

From the page read on 2026-09-30: max 20 MB, max 4472 x 4472 px (20 MP), recommended 2048 x 2048 px, and PNG, GIF, JPEG, WEBP or HEIC.

Where does Sume's limit sit against it?

The Image API docs say custom image_size on ChatGPT Image 2.5 needs both edges as multiples of 16, a maximum edge of 3840, an aspect ratio of at most 3:1, and 655,360 to 8,294,400 pixels. The largest square inside that is 2880 x 2880, which is exactly 8,294,400 pixels.

How do I request the largest square?

Send image_size as WIDTHxHEIGHT. Larger and higher quality requests are the ones most likely to come back as a 202 job instead of a 200 image, so check the status code.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/images \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "openai/gpt-image-2.5",
    "prompt": "Ceramic mug on a plain white background, product photo",
    "image_size": "2880x2880",
    "output_format": "webp"
  }'

Do I still need to check file size?

Yes. The docs list output_compression as not served in v1, and they do not publish a byte size for outputs, so measure the file. If it exceeds 20 MB, request a smaller image_size or another output_format.
