Premiere 26.5 Object Mask vs Sume background removal on stills
Premiere 26.5 adds Sharp and Smooth Object Mask modes for video. Sume's RMBG removes backgrounds from images only and returns a PNG with alpha.

Premiere 26.5 adds Sharp and Smooth modes to Object Mask, which is a video tool. Sume has no video background removal. Its POST /v1/rmbg-1.0/remove works on an image and returns a PNG with an alpha channel. For a video, the closest path is to extract a frame as PNG and cut out that one frame.
The still-frame route
Call video-frames with format: png for lossless stills, up to 24 per call, from a source of up to 300 seconds. Pass a frame URL to RMBG. The result is one cutout per image, so there is no tracking across frames and no consistency between them.
| Question | Premiere 26.5 Object Mask | Sume RMBG |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Video in a sequence | A single image |
| Edge control | Sharp and Smooth modes | Not exposed |
| Output | Mask applied to the clip | PNG with alpha |
| Motion | Not stated in the post | None |
When this is enough
A thumbnail, a product still or a title card needs one clean cutout, and that is a fine fit. Moving subjects over a few seconds need an editor's tracker.
Honest limits
- No video matting at all.
- Frame-by-frame cutouts will flicker if recomposed into video.
- Adobe's post lists the modes but not accuracy.
