IPTC minorHumanEdits was retired: use humanEdits instead
IPTC retired minorHumanEdits on 2024-09-17 and replaced it with humanEdits. Which Sume edits (trim, filter, caption) are non-generative ffmpeg passes.

IPTC retired the digital source type minorHumanEdits on 2024-09-17 and says to use humanEdits instead. The replacement term covers augmentation, correction or enhancement by humans using non-generative tools. A Sume trim, filter or caption pass is a worker ffmpeg step, so it is a non-generative edit, but a person still has to decide the label.
Terms and the Sume routes that match
Definitions are from the IPTC vocabulary page. The rightmost column comes from the Sume docs for each route.
| IPTC term | Meaning on the IPTC page | Closest Sume route |
|---|---|---|
| humanEdits | Augmentation by humans using non-generative tools | Video trim, video filter |
| minorHumanEdits | Retired 2024-09-17, replaced by humanEdits | Do not use |
| trainedAlgorithmicMedia | Created using generative AI | Image, video and music generation |
| compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia | Edited using generative AI | Generative edits to a real source |
What the docs say about the passes
Video trim documents worker ffmpeg only, with no provider inference, and rejects client ffmpeg keys. Video filter compiles dim, crop and an allowlisted filtergraph on the worker the same way. Neither calls a generative model, so neither one turns a real clip into trainedAlgorithmicMedia by itself.
Captions
Captions are a separate route. Check the Video captions page for how it works before you label a captioned file.
Label hygiene
- If you stored minorHumanEdits in old records, map it to humanEdits.
- If any step used a generative model, the file is no longer a plain humanEdits case.
- Sume does not write the IPTC field into the output file, according to its docs.
