ElevenLabs API $0.08 per 1,000 characters vs plan credits at $0.165
ElevenLabs plans work out to $0.165 to $0.20 per 1,000 characters at one credit per character, while its API lists $0.08 for v3 and $0.04 for Flash.

On the two ElevenLabs pages read on 2026-10-04, the API is cheaper per character than the subscription plans. A plan at one credit per character works out to about $0.165 to $0.20 per 1,000 characters, while the API page lists v3 and v2 Multilingual at $0.08 per 1,000 characters and Flash or Turbo at $0.04. Sume's text to speech is $0.0475 per 1,000 characters, between the two API tiers.
A plan still bundles other things, such as the editor and voice library, so the cheaper unit price is not automatically the better deal.
What do the ElevenLabs plans cost per 1,000 characters?
ElevenLabs' pricing page lists Starter at $6 for 30,000 credits, Creator at $22 for 121,000, Pro at $99 for 600,000, Scale at $299 for 1.8 million and Business at $990 for 6 million, with one credit per character on the Multilingual v2 model. Dividing each fee by its credits gives the per-1,000-character price.
| Option | Fee | Included characters | Per 1,000 characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter plan | $6 | 30,000 | $0.200 |
| Creator plan | $22 | 121,000 | $0.182 |
| Pro plan | $99 | 600,000 | $0.165 |
| Scale plan | $299 | 1,800,000 | $0.166 |
| Business plan | $990 | 6,000,000 | $0.165 |
| API, v3 or v2 Multilingual | pay as you go | n/a | $0.08 |
| API, Flash or Turbo | pay as you go | n/a | $0.04 |
| Sume TTS | pay as you go | n/a | $0.0475 |
Why is the plan price flat above Pro?
From Pro to Business the per-character price barely moves, between $0.165 and $0.166 per 1,000. Going from $99 to $990 buys ten times the volume at the same unit cost. That means upgrading is not about a lower price per character at this range; it is about headroom and plan features, and the volume you actually need.
Is the API always the better route?
Not always. I used only the one-credit-per-character figure the page states for Multilingual v2, and other models or features may spend credits differently, so check the page for the model you use. If you only generate voice through code, the API list is the number to compare. If you also work in ElevenLabs' own app, a plan is part of that workflow and the comparison is not purely per character.
- Code-only voice: API at $0.04 to $0.08 per 1,000 characters.
- Studio plus occasional code: a Creator or Pro plan.
- Voice next to video, music and transcription on one balance: Sume's $0.0475.
