Canva export limits: 750 per 5 minutes vs Sume's generation queue

Canva design exports cap an app at 750 per 5 minutes and a user at 500 per day. Sume queues instead: max(3, concurrency x 5) jobs, then 429 queue_full.

The limits

Canva's export job reference sets rate limits at three levels: an app gets 750 per 5 minutes and 5,000 per 24 hours, a document 75 per 5 minutes, and a user 75 per 5 minutes and 500 per 24 hours. The endpoint also allows 20 requests per minute per user. Those are request rates, enforced with an error you retry.

What it means for a pipeline

If you export 200 designs and then caption each on Sume, Canva is the throttle: a user at 75 per 5 minutes needs three windows for 200 (200 divided by 75 is 2.67), and 20 a minute caps it near 10 minutes anyway. A Pro workspace on Sume processes 4 at once and queues up to 20 more (4 x 5), so push captions as exports finish rather than all at once.

Treat the two 429s differently. rate_limited means wait for the reset header. queue_full means the backlog is full: pace your submits. Never fix either by creating a duplicate paid job: reuse the Idempotency-Key.

Caveat

The Canva page lists export quality, document and app limits but not the clock for an export URL, so download or hand it on promptly. Admission rules are in generation admission.
