Toast menu images: 750x450, 5 MB, crop-safe dishes
Toast recommends 750 x 450 px menu item images up to 5 MB that may be cropped. Generate a 3:2 plate with Sume, then crop to 5:3 with a short script.

Toast recommends menu item images of 750 x 450 pixels and says they may be cropped or zoomed on the point of sale, so keep the dish in the centre. One Toast article says JPG or PNG up to 5 MB; the online-ordering article says PNG. Because the two differ, export PNG to satisfy both. 750 x 450 is a 5:3 frame, which the Sume Image API does not list, so request 3:2 and crop.
The numbers are from two Toast support articles, read on 2026-10-02: menu item images and online ordering.
What do the Toast pages say?
The two articles overlap with small differences.
| Item | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 750 x 450 px |
| Format | JPG or PNG (menu item article); PNG (online ordering article) |
| Maximum file size | 5 MB (menu item article) |
| Cropping | Images may be cropped or zoomed for the POS; centre key content |
| Publishing delay | Can take at least two hours to appear after publishing |
Should the photo be real or generated?
Toast's pages do not address AI. A guest orders what the photo promises, so use your real dish and let AI clean the background or table, not change the food. The same care applies on delivery apps, which have their own rules.
Generate 3:2, then crop to 750 x 450
The Image API takes input_references and aspect_ratio. Ask for 3:2, download the result, then run this Pillow step to land on the exact size Toast recommends.
from PIL import Image
img = Image.open("dish-3x2.png").convert("RGB")
target_ratio = 750 / 450
w, h = img.size
new_h = int(w / target_ratio)
top = (h - new_h) // 2
img = img.crop((0, top, w, top + new_h)).resize((750, 450))
img.save("dish-750x450.png")
print(img.size)
