Shopify product video limits: 1 GB, 10 min, 0.25 s. Trim to fit

Shopify allows MOV, MP4 and WEBM up to 1 GB and 10 minutes, with a 0.25 s minimum. Cut a long clip to fit with Sume video-trim at $0.02 a job.

Shopify's file-upload page lists video as MOV, MP4 and WEBM, up to 1 GB, at most 10 minutes long and at least 0.25 seconds, with a maximum of UHD resolution (100 to 4096 pixels) and 120 frames per second. If your master is 14 minutes, you must cut it to 600 seconds or less. Sume's video trim takes a start and a duration of 0.2 to 900 seconds and returns a new MP4 for $0.02 per job.

Note the one gap: Sume's trim floor is 0.2 seconds, Shopify's is 0.25. A 0.2 second cut is accepted by Sume and refused by Shopify.

These values come from Shopify Help Center, Uploading and managing files as read today.

Cut it to 600 seconds

Import the clip into your workspace first (POST /v1/media-imports); trim reads only a media.sume.com artifact. Then ask for the range. With the default precision of exact, Sume re-encodes frame-accurately (libx264, yuv420p). The result is a new artifact; the source does not change.

Trim does not shrink file size on purpose. A 600 second cut can still be over 1 GB at a high bitrate, so check the size of what comes back.

Which Sume limit applies where

Poll GET /v1/jobs/:id/status and then /result; the result gives video_url, duration_seconds and actual_start_seconds. Trim is async by default; send mode: sync to wait up to 30 seconds for a completed job.

So for Shopify, use duration between 0.25 and 600. For Black Friday, trim once and reuse the artifact on every product that shares the clip.

A pre-upload checklist

Run this list before you push a clip to a product page. First, check the container: if your editor exported something other than MOV, MP4 or WEBM, re-export. Trim always returns MP4, so a trimmed artifact satisfies the format rule by construction. Second, check length: 600 seconds is the hard cap, and a Black Friday product clip is usually far shorter, often 15 to 30 seconds. Third, check size: a long, high-bitrate master can break the 1 GB cap even when its length is fine, so look at the file size of the result, not just its duration.

Fourth, check the lower edge. A duration of 0.2 is legal in Sume but under Shopify's 0.25 second floor, so any program that cuts very short b-roll for a product page should clamp to 0.25 in your own code. Fifth, if the source is shorter than the end you asked for, Sume clamps and returns the warning trim_clamped_to_source; read warnings[] so you do not ship a clip that is shorter than you planned.

If you need three lengths of the same master, run three trim jobs: 3 x $0.02 = $0.06. Use a fresh Idempotency-Key for each, for example shopify-trim-master-001-15s.
