Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026 as a visual workspace for designing a store, with its Sidekick assistant, rolling out over the coming days and not yet replacing the existing editor. Shopify's page does not list media sizes, so I cannot give you a Canvas spec. Sume can make a wide hero image and a tall clip now so they are ready.

Shopify facts are from its news post, read 2026-10-01. Sume facts are from the Images API and Videos API docs.

What can I prepare without a spec?

Generate at ratios that crop well: a wide image for a banner and a tall clip for mobile. Both are ordinary requests, and you can re-crop later because you generate above the size you need.

Wide heroPOST /v1/imagesaspect_ratio: "16:9"
Square tilePOST /v1/imagesaspect_ratio: "1:1"
Tall loopPOST /v1/videosaspect_ratio: "9:16"

What does the hero request look like?

Keep copy out of the image, because text belongs in the theme where Sidekick or you can edit it. Leave empty space on one side for a headline.

curl -X POST "https://api.sume.com/v1/images" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "openai/gpt-image-2.5",
    "prompt": "Autumn candle collection on a wooden shelf, warm light, empty space on the left, no text",
    "aspect_ratio": "16:9",
    "output_format": "jpeg"
  }'

What should I wait for?

Wait until Shopify publishes Canvas limits before you size anything exactly. Today's product media limits are in the Shopify video format post, and a seasonal hero example is in the BFCM hero post.
