Can you premiere a YouTube Short or make it members-only?

No Premieres for Shorts, but members-only Shorts exist: 60 seconds, square or vertical, original audio only. What Help says and how to cut a 60-second version.

You cannot premiere a YouTube Short, but you can make one members-only. YouTube Help says plainly that "Shorts aren't supported for Premieres". Members-only Shorts are a separate feature: up to 60 seconds, square or vertical, and fully original, with no music owned by third parties, including the Shorts music library.

Both facts come from YouTube Help pages read on 2026-10-03: Premiere a new video and Create or manage your YouTube channel's memberships levels & perks. The 3-minute Shorts length on the Upload YouTube Shorts page is a different ceiling from the members-only one, which matters if you cut one master for both. Sume's part is cutting and assembling the file; it does not set visibility on YouTube.

What do the two help pages say?

The premiere page is short on this point, so there is little to interpret. The memberships page has a section for members-only Shorts that lists the steps and the rules.

Premieres and members-only Shorts, as the YouTube Help pages state them (read 2026-10-03).

What the pages do not say

The memberships page describes a members-only to public option, where you set the date and time a video changes to public. It describes that for members-only videos, and the members-only Shorts section does not mention it. I am not claiming it works for Shorts; open the Visibility options in Studio to see what your upload offers. For the scheduling side of Shorts in general, see Can you schedule YouTube Shorts.

The page also does not say how YouTube checks that a Short is "fully original". Treat the audio rule as strict: a clip with a licensed track, a trending sound, or a library track is the exact thing the sentence excludes.

How do I make a 60-second members cut with Sume?

If your public Short runs longer than 60 seconds, the members version needs its own cut. Video trim takes one clip already on Sume's media host and returns a new MP4 for a start plus either an end or a duration. It costs $0.02 per job, and a mode of sync waits up to 30 seconds for the answer. The source stays untouched, so one master can feed both versions.

Two options for the audio. Trim with audio: "drop" and add your own recording or voice in the YouTube app, or keep the audio if every sound in the clip is yours. If you assemble with Timeline 1.0, its soundtrack field is optional, so leaving the music bed out is a valid choice, and the default output is 1080 by 1920. Whether a given generated or licensed track counts as original is YouTube's call, not something Sume can promise.

import json, os, urllib.request

body = {
    "video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/short.mp4",
    "start": 0,
    "duration": 60,
    "audio": "keep",
    "mode": "sync",
}
req = urllib.request.Request(
    "https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim",
    data=json.dumps(body).encode(),
    headers={
        "Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["SUME_API_KEY"],
        "Content-Type": "application/json",
        "Idempotency-Key": "members-cut-001",
    },
    method="POST",
)
with urllib.request.urlopen(req) as resp:
    print(resp.status)
    print(json.dumps(json.load(resp), indent=2))

What to do instead of a Premiere

Premieres are for regular videos, and the Premiere page rules Shorts out, so the options left are the ones the pages do describe: a members-only Short for a paid audience, or a normal Short. If you want a launch moment, put it on a long video and let the Short point to it; Add a related video to a YouTube Short made outside YouTube covers that link.
