Add a related video to a YouTube Short made outside YouTube
A related video is a clickable link under a Short's channel name. YouTube says it needs advanced features and a public or unlisted video. Set it in Studio.

Yes: after you upload a Short, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, pick the Short, choose a Related video from your channel and Save. YouTube's help page says you need advanced feature access, and that the linked video must be public or unlisted and follow the Community Guidelines. It can be a video, a Short or a live stream, and viewers see it as clickable text beneath your channel name (read 2026-10-03).
This matters for a Short you cut outside YouTube, because the link does not come for free. YouTube's Video Clips & Shorts tool page says the source video is added automatically as a related video to Shorts made with that tool, unless the Short is private, unlisted or Made for Kids. A file you uploaded yourself gets no such link until you set it.
What is the exact path in Studio?
The steps below are the ones on YouTube's page, in order. The related video is chosen after the upload, so publish the Short first.
| Step or rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Where | YouTube Studio, then Content, then the Short you want to edit. |
| What to pick | A Related video from your own channel, then Save. |
| Who can use it | Channels with advanced feature access. |
| Which videos qualify | Public or unlisted, and within the Community Guidelines. |
| What it can point to | Videos, Shorts and live streams. |
| What viewers see | Clickable text beneath your channel name. |
Why use it instead of a link in the description?
Because the description will not work as a link. YouTube's link clickability page lists URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments as non-clickable, and Related Videos in Shorts as clickable (read 2026-10-03). For a Short that teases a long video, the related video is the in-product way to send people to it.
The help page does not say whether you can change the related video later, how many a Short can have, or whether Studio reports clicks on it. Do not promise any of those to a client.
What does Sume do here?
Sume returns the finished Short as a file. Timeline 1.0 renders one MP4 from clips you give it (docs read 2026-10-03). I found no related-video field anywhere in Sume's code or docs, so this step stays in YouTube Studio, after upload.
A workable order for a long video with Shorts cut from it: upload the long video, upload each Short, then add the long video as each Short's related video. The posts below cover the cutting side.
