Pinterest video Pin file types: MP4 and M4V on web, MOV on phones too

Pinterest accepts .MP4 and .M4V on web and .MP4, .MOV and .M4V on Android and iOS, in H.264 or H.265, 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Sume returns MP4. What to verify.

Pinterest's Pin spec lists .MP4 and .M4V for web uploads and .MP4, .MOV and .M4V for Android and iOS, with H.264 or H.265 encoding and a length of 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Sume's timeline, trim and video-filter jobs return MP4, so the container is covered on both web and mobile.

The spec, line by line

From Pinterest's Pin spec guide: file type is .MP4 or .M4V on web, and .MP4, .MOV or .M4V on Android and iOS. Video encoding is H.264 or H.265. Length is a minimum of 4 seconds and a maximum of 5 minutes. For full-bleed video it recommends 9:16, or 1080x1920, and lists 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 as other options. Title is 100 characters at most.

What Sume gives you

The Sume docs describe Timeline 1.0 as returning one MP4, video-trim as returning a new MP4 containing only the chosen range, and video-filter as returning a new MP4. The default Timeline output is 1080x1920, which is the size Pinterest recommends for full bleed.

The docs do not state the codec of the output. Treat the H.264 or H.265 line as something to confirm on your own file with ffprobe before you rely on it, rather than as a Sume guarantee.

A pre-flight check

Two checks are cheap. First, the duration: a clip under 4 seconds is rejected by Pinterest, and Seedance's shortest duration is 4 seconds in the catalog, so a single generation clears the floor. Second, the codec on a sample file from your pipeline.

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 \
  -show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,duration \
  -of default=nw=1 pin-video.mp4

Where the safe zone fits in

The same page gives the Pin safe zone: 270 px at the top, 65 at the left, 195 at the right and 790 at the bottom. If you burn captions with Sume's caption job, set the anchor_ratio so the line sits above the 790 px band at 1080x1920. At that size the line must end above y = 1920 - 790 = 1130.
