Can Meta AI images @-mention my public Instagram account? The setting
Instagram's Stories effects from Meta AI let the feature use public accounts. What the page says, where the opt-out is, and what brands should do with Sume.

According to Instagram's announcement, you can stop your public account from being @-mentioned in Meta AI image generation under Instagram Settings > Sharing and Reuse, mobile only for now. The same page says the mention feature was disabled shortly after launch because of user feedback, and that the new Stories effects are available in the United States only.
All of this comes from Instagram's New Effects in Stories from Meta AI, read on 2026-10-03. The page is a product announcement, so it does not explain how the feature treats brand accounts, logos or trademarks.
What are the new effects?
Instagram says there are over 30 new effects, powered by Muse Image, which it calls Meta's first AI image generation model from Superintelligence Labs. The AI reads a photo's scene, meaning lighting, composition and subject, and applies an edit with a single tap on an existing photo. The examples listed include Night Flash, Disposable, Puffer, Paper Doll and IG Charms, and custom prompts are available. Five Instagram creators designed curated effects that appear in the New tab.
What does the Sharing and Reuse setting control?
The page describes one control: users can disable their public account from being @-mentioned in AI image generation, through Instagram Settings > Sharing and Reuse, on mobile only at the time of the post. It then notes that the @-mention feature was turned off soon after launch.
| Topic | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Model | Muse Image |
| Number of effects | Over 30 |
| Availability | United States only |
| Opt-out of @-mentions | Settings > Sharing and Reuse, mobile only |
| Current status of @-mentions | Disabled shortly after launch after user feedback |
| Brand accounts | Not addressed |
What should a brand do?
Open Settings > Sharing and Reuse on the mobile app and look at the toggle for each account you manage. Because the page does not mention brand accounts, check the setting on the professional account itself and do not assume it matches a personal one.
This is account hygiene, not a Sume feature. Sume does not read, change or monitor Instagram settings.
How is generating your own image different?
Meta's effects edit a photo inside Instagram. With Sume's Image API you send a prompt and your own reference images to a catalog model; for example openai/gpt-image-2.5 supports up to 16 image references. You choose the references, so the account or person in the picture is whoever you supply, with the rights that come with that choice.
Sume does not claim that its images are exempt from the labeling rules of the platform where you post. Keep a note of each job and the reference files you used, and read the job result as described in Jobs and results.
