LinkedIn Videos API: 500MB or 5GB? Plan for the lower number

LinkedIn's Videos API page lists a 75kb to 500MB file size and a 5GB maximum. Sume states no output file size, so measure the MP4 first.

Plan for 500MB, since the Microsoft Learn Videos API page lists "File size: Between 75kb and 500MB" and also "Maximum allowed Videos size is 5GB", so a file under 500MB satisfies both lines. Sume's docs state no output file size, so check your MP4 before upload.

What does the page say?

Both size numbers are quoted from the Videos API page, next to its length and format lines.

Which number should I trust?

The two quotes do not say which one applies to your account, so this post does not pick between them. The lower one is the cautious reading, because a file under 500MB is inside both.

How do I keep a Sume MP4 small?

Sume's trim and timeline routes accept no bitrate or codec field (codec, crf and preset are refused as ffmpeg_fields_rejected), so the levers are length, output size (width and height 256 to 2160) and fps. Cut with https://docs.sume.com/models/video-trim and measure after each change. The docs do not say how much each lever reduces the file.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: linkedin-size-001" \
  -d '{
    "video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/talk.mp4",
    "start": 0,
    "duration": 120,
    "output": { "width": 1280, "height": 720, "fps": 30 }
  }'

How do I check the file before upload?

A finished trim or timeline job returns a video_url on media.sume.com. Download it and measure the bytes yourself, since Sume's result does not list a size. The page also says to "Split the file into 4 MB each" for upload, so the byte count decides how many parts you send. Sume does not upload to LinkedIn; that call is yours.

  • Measure the bytes of the file you will upload.
  • Compare with 500MB, the lower number on the page.
  • Re-read LinkedIn's page before shipping, since limits move.
