Is Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS free? Yes, with a data-use catch
Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS as free of charge on the free tier, but free-tier content is used to improve Google products. The paid tier is not.

Yes: Google's pricing page lists input and output for gemini-3.8-flash-tts and gemini-3.8-flash-lite-tts as "Free of charge" on the Standard free tier. The catch is on the same page: for the free tier, "Used to improve our products" is Yes, and on the paid tier it is No. Do not send private scripts or customer text through the free tier.
What is free and what is not
Only the Standard and Priority tables show a free column for these models. The Batch and Flex tables say "Not available" for the free tier, so bulk narration needs billing.
| Tier | Free tier | Paid tier (to Dec 31, 2026) | Free tier data used to improve products |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Free of charge | $9.00 per 1M audio tokens (Flash) | Yes |
| Batch | Not available | $4.50 per 1M audio tokens (Flash) | n/a |
| Flex | Not available | $4.50 per 1M audio tokens (Flash) | n/a |
| Priority | Free of charge | $16.20 per 1M audio tokens (Flash) | Yes |
What the page does not tell you
The pricing page gives no request or character limit for the free tier. Check your project's limits in Google AI Studio and treat any number you cannot find there as unknown. Free-tier terms can change, so do not build a paid product on them.
A safe way to use the free tier
- Prototype voices and prompts with non-sensitive text.
- Switch to a paid project before you send client scripts, unreleased copy or personal data.
- Re-check the January 1, 2027 change: paid prices double then, and the free column is the only part of the table that stays at zero.
