Instagram Plus: what it is and what it means for Reels creators
Instagram Plus is an optional subscription with Story and profile features. Its announcement lists no Reels specs, so a 9:16 AI clip is made the same way.

Instagram Plus is a new optional subscription from Instagram that adds features around Stories, previews and insights, and profile customization. Instagram's announcement says it is "rolling out globally starting today" and that the free Instagram "isn't changing and will always be free." It lists no Reels feature and no change to video specs, so for a creator the way you make and export a vertical clip stays the same.
Everything about Instagram Plus below comes from Instagram's own announcement, read 2026-09-29. It does not state a price, so this post gives none. The Sume facts come from the video generation docs.
What does Instagram Plus include?
The announcement groups the features into three sets. Only the features named on the page are listed here.
| Group | Features named |
|---|---|
| Get closer to who matters | Story Spotlight, Super Hearts, Multiple Story Audiences, Story Extend |
| See previews and insights | Story Preview, Story Rewatch Insights, Search Viewer List |
| Make it yours | Custom App Icon, Custom Bio Font, More Profile Pins, Post Directly to Profile |
Does Instagram Plus change what a Reel needs?
Nothing on the announcement page says so. It names Story and profile features and no Reels ones, and it does not mention video length, aspect ratio, or upload limits. Treat the Reels requirements as unchanged until Instagram's own help pages say otherwise, and check those pages before you rely on a spec. Our post on Instagram Reels API video requirements covers the spec side.
Do I need a subscription to post AI-made video?
The announcement does not tie any feature to how a clip was made, and it states the free Instagram is unchanged. Whether a clip came from a camera or from a video model is not something the page addresses. What a subscription adds is on the table above, and none of it is a content rule. If you post clips from a script or a pipeline, the practical checklist is short: a 9:16 clip, a length inside what the platform accepts today, and the disclosure your account needs. Read Instagram's help pages for the last two, because this announcement covers neither.
How do I make a vertical clip for Reels with Sume?
Send POST /v1/videos with a model, a prompt, aspect_ratio of 9:16, and a duration. In the catalog example, seedance-2 lists 9:16 among its aspect ratios and durations from 4 to 15 seconds; seedance-2.5 accepts 4 to 30 seconds. Check supported_aspect_ratios and supported_durations for the model you pick before you submit.
curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/videos \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "seedance-2",
"prompt": "A vertical product clip on a desk, natural light",
"aspect_ratio": "9:16",
"duration": 5
}'Sources
