Google Ads image sizes: 1200×628, 1200×1200, and 960×1200

Google's most common ad image sizes are 1200×628 (1.91:1) and 1200×1200 (1:1), plus 960×1200 (4:5) for Performance Max, as JPG or PNG up to 5,120 KB.

The most common Google Ads image sizes are 1200×628 (landscape, 1.91:1) and 1200×1200 (square, 1:1). Performance Max also recommends 960×1200 portrait images (4:5) and logos at 1200×1200 (1:1) and 1200×300 (4:1), each a JPG or PNG of up to 5,120 KB. On Sume, ChatGPT Image 2.5 takes 1200×1200 and 960×1200 as exact sizes; for landscape, ask for 3056×1600, which is exactly 1.91:1, and resize it.

Google's numbers are quoted from Google Ads Help: the specs overview, Performance Max specs, Performance Max image assets, responsive display ads specs and image assets format requirements. Sume facts come from the Image API docs and the Sume API reference. All were read on 2026-09-28.

What image sizes does Google Ads recommend?

Google says 1.91:1 and 1:1 images can serve across the majority of its network and placements. Performance Max adds the 4:5 portrait image, and the responsive display ads page lists its square image at 600×600 rather than 1200×1200.

What are Google's image requirements?

  • Files: JPG or PNG, 5,120 KB (5 MB) at most.
  • Safe area: keep the important content in the center 80% of the image, which won't be cut off on any screen size.
  • Performance Max requires landscape and square images and a square logo; portrait images and the 4:1 logo are optional.
  • Logos: Google may show a transparent logo on a white background in most ads, so it recommends square logos and warns against a mostly white logo on a transparent background. Export both logo sizes from your own logo file.

How do I make each size with Sume?

Send POST /v1/images to ChatGPT Image 2.5 (openai/gpt-image-2.5) with the size as a custom image_size. Both edges must be multiples of 16, so 1200×628 isn't a valid custom size: 628 isn't a multiple of 16. Ask for 3056×1600 and resize it to 1200 px wide in an image editor.

  • Ask for jpeg, one of the two formats Google lists, and check that each file is under 5,120 KB.
  • Performance Max recommends four or more landscape and square images. n asks for several versions in one call; ChatGPT Image 2.5's catalog ceiling is 4 today.
  • The charge is estimated from the image's size and quality, and usage.cost in the response is the USD amount billed.
  • Results are Sume-hosted, signed URLs in data[].url, so download the files you keep.
curl -X POST "https://api.sume.com/v1/images" \

    "image_size": { "width": 960, "height": 1200 },
    "output_format": "jpeg",

  }'

Can responsive display ads include videos?

Yes, optionally: 1 to 5 videos (2 recommended) in 16:9, 1:1 or 2:3 vertical, any length, with 30 seconds preferred. Performance Max video specs covers making 16:9 and 1:1 ad videos with Sume.

Do AI-generated ad images need a label?

Sometimes. Google's image asset pages say AI regulations in the European Union, India and New York require disclosures or labels on ads with certain AI-generated or edited assets; YouTube Shorts ad specs covers the same rule and Google's AI label setting.
