Google Play feature graphic size: 1024×500 requirements
A Google Play feature graphic must be 1024×500 px, a JPEG or a 24-bit PNG with no alpha, and you need one to publish. The rules, and making the art.

A Google Play feature graphic must be 1024×500 pixels, saved as a JPEG or a 24-bit PNG with no alpha, and you must provide one to publish your store listing. Google shows it as the cover of your preview video and in large-format collections of apps and games, so keep the logo, app name and slogan out of the cutoff zones and toward the center. On Sume, generate the art at 2048×1024 with ChatGPT Image 2.5, halve it to 1024×512, and trim 6 pixels from the top and bottom.
Google Play's rules are quoted from the Play Console Help page Add preview assets to showcase your app. Sume facts come from the Image API docs and the Sume API reference. All were read on 2026-09-28.
What is a Google Play feature graphic?
It's a required image for every store listing. Google Play uses it as the cover image for your preview video, where a play button sits on top of it, in large-format collections of apps (including ads), and in groups of recommended games. Google marks its size and format as requirements, which are mandatory; its design guidelines are highly recommended, and ignoring them can change how the asset appears or limit promotional opportunities.
| Asset | Google Play requires | Size | Where the image comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feature graphic | Required to publish; JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha) | 1024×500 | Art you design or generate, e.g. 2048×1024 on ChatGPT Image 2.5, then resized and trimmed |
| App icon | Required to publish; 32-bit PNG (with alpha), 1024 KB max | 512×512 | Your app's icon, following Google Play's icon design specifications |
| Screenshots | At least 2; JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha) | 320 to 3840 px per side; the long side at most twice the short | Captures of your app or game |
What are the feature graphic guidelines?
- Keep the brand logo, app name, primary slogan and main UI out of the cutoff zones, with the focal point toward the center; restrict background elements to the edges.
- Avoid fine details, which won't be visible on many phone screens.
- Use vibrant colors, and avoid pure white, black or dark gray, which can blend into Google Play's background.
- Don't repeat prominent branding from your app icon; the two can be shown together.
- Leave out words that suggest performance, ranking or price, such as “Best,” “#1,” “Top,” “New,” “Free,” “Discount,” “Sale” or “Million Downloads.”
- Leave out device imagery, Google Play or other store badges, and third-party characters or logos you don't have permission to use.
- Add alt text of 140 characters or less, and localize the graphic's text for each market.
How do I make a feature graphic with AI?
Ask ChatGPT Image 2.5 (openai/gpt-image-2.5) for a custom image_size of 2048×1024. 1024×500 itself isn't a valid custom size: 500 isn't a multiple of 16, and 512,000 pixels is under the 655,360 minimum. In an image editor, scale the result to 1024×512, trim 6 pixels from the top and the bottom, and export a JPEG or a 24-bit PNG without alpha.
- Describe the scene and ask for no text, then set your app name and slogan yourself in the editor, toward the center; that also makes a localized version per market a text swap.
nreturns up to 4 versions per call on this model today, and each one is billed;usage.costin the response is the USD amount.- Results are Sume-hosted, signed URLs in

"image_size": { "width": 2048, "height": 1024 },
"output_format": "jpeg"
}'Can AI make the screenshots and preview video too?
Not if you follow Google's guidance. Google says screenshots must demonstrate the actual in-app or in-game experience, using captured footage of the app or game, and asks you to aim for at least 80% of a preview video to be representative of the user experience. Generated art fits the feature graphic, not those assets. The preview video itself is a YouTube URL you enter in Play Console.
