A news roundup reports that TikTok's algorithm rewards videos of 3 to 5 minutes. Treat it as a hypothesis to test, not a rule. Building a 3 minute vertical video on Sume with Seedance 2.5 costs about $104.00 for the shots, and a 5 minute one costs about $173.34.

The source is Metricool's TikTok news page, read on 2026-10-03. It is a secondary roundup, not a statement from TikTok.

What you can post

TikTok's media transfer guide says all creators can post 3-minute videos, and some have access to 5-minute or 10-minute videos. The upload endpoint allows up to 10 minutes. So 3 minutes is the safe test length, and 5 minutes depends on your account.

Cost by length

Seedance 2.5 takes 4 to 30 seconds per clip. At 720p and 9:16 it is $0.5778 per second, and pricing is linear. Timeline 1.0 charges $0.10 per started output minute. Prices below are shots plus assembly.

Vertical video cost at 720p (as of 2026-10-03)
Length30 s shotsShotsTimelineTotal
60 s2$34.67$0.10$34.77
90 s3$52.00$0.20$52.20
180 s6$104.00$0.30$104.30
300 s10$173.34$0.50$173.84

A cheaper way to run the test

If the aim is to see whether a longer cut gets better watch time, do not rebuild each time. Make one 3 minute episode, then derive a 60 second version by trimming with video trim at $0.02 per job. You pay once for the shots and compare lengths on the same story.

Also run the plan endpoint first. POST /v1/timeline-1.0/plan is unbilled and returns the cost estimate before you render.

What the number does not tell you

Longer videos cost more in generation, and retries are new jobs. The roundup does not say whether the reward is for watch time, completion or something else. Measure your own retention at each length before you budget a season around it. Sume produces the file; it does not report how TikTok ranks it.
