One 20-second avatar Short a day for 30 days is 600 seconds of video, which costs $110.40 on Sume's standard tier and $147.00 on plus at list rates with no product image. YouTube's help page says Shorts can be up to three minutes long and must be square or vertical, so a 20-second 9:16 or 1:1 clip is well inside the rules.

The YouTube rules are from its help page, read 2026-10-03. The Sume rates are from API pricing, and the route and preview flow from Generate avatar video and Avatar video previews.

What does a month cost?

Sume's avatar video accepts 1:1 and 9:16, both of which YouTube treats as Shorts-eligible shapes, since Shorts must be square or vertical. The avatar window is 4 to 60 seconds, so the daily clip fits even if you stretch it to a minute.

Where the YouTube rules matter

The same help page says videos uploaded after 15 October 2024 that are vertical or square and up to three minutes are categorised as Shorts on standard channels. A 16:9 clip would not count, so choose the aspect ratio when you submit, because it is a request field and not something you can change later without a re-render.

The page also notes that Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked globally and cannot be monetised. If you plan to use music, keep clips under a minute or use audio you hold rights to.

  • Pick 9:16 for the Shorts feed, or 1:1 for a clip you also post to a feed grid.
  • Add inline captions with captions.enabled; the default style is slam.
  • Keep one avatar handle across the series so the host is consistent.

Saving money on a daily habit

Preview stills are independent of quality tier, and generate-video can set the final tier, so you can approve a frame once and decide at render time whether the clip is a standard-tier regular or a plus-tier flagship. A cheap routine is standard on most days and plus on the one clip a week you want to push.

On a Free workspace, only one job processes at a time, which is fine for a daily clip. Queue next week's scripts on Sunday, derive each key from the date, such as short-2026-10-04-v1, and rerun a day only by bumping the version.

A mixed month is a sensible default. Twenty-four standard clips and six plus clips at 20 seconds each cost $88.32 plus $29.40, which is $117.72, against $110.40 all standard and $147.00 all plus. Because the tier is chosen at render time, you can decide after seeing the preview which days earn the better render, and the series does not need a separate avatar for the upgrade.
