ByteDance signed a copyright protection agreement with the Motion Picture Association on August 17, 2026, covering its Seedance video and Seedream image models, according to The Next Web. Neither side disclosed the actual guardrails, so the practical advice is to treat any prompt that names a studio character or franchise as likely to be refused, and to handle that failure in code.

What was and was not disclosed

What Dreamina says it does

Dreamina's Seedance 2.5 launch page says its safety measures include blocks on harmful content, unauthorized likeness use and IP infringement, along with invisible watermarks, C2PA Content Credentials and visible AI labels (read 2026-10-02). That is a statement about Dreamina, not about every place Seedance runs.

What it means for a pipeline

If you call Seedance through an API, a refused or failed request arrives as a failed job, not a blank video. On Sume, GET /v1/videos/{jobId} returns status: failed with an error field, and the video docs say to check that field. Do not retry the identical prompt in a loop; a refusal will not clear by itself.

Sume's docs do not publish a list of blocked prompts for Seedance, and this page does not claim one.

  • Keep prompts about your own characters, products and brands.
  • Log the error text of every failed job so reviewers can see patterns.
  • Route a failed job to a person, not to an automatic retry.

What to do next

If your work involves licensed characters, get the licence first and keep it with the project. The pact is about outputs; it does not change what you may publish.
