Best MCP for image generation: 5 servers side by side

There is no single best MCP server for image generation: the right one depends on which models you want, how you sign in, and how you pay. This page compares five vendors whose own docs describe a hosted MCP server that makes images from Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients: fal, Higgsfield, Replicate, Runway, and Sume.

Each vendor's facts below come only from its own pages, read on 2026-09-28; Sume's come from its MCP overview and Image API docs. The table is alphabetical and ranks nothing. Claude itself can't draw; it calls a tool like these (Can Claude generate images?).

Which MCP servers can generate images?

All five are remote servers you add by URL. They differ in sign-in, model range, and billing.

Which image MCP server should I pick?

Match the server to what you already use:

• Pick fal if you want to search a large catalog and check a model's price with get_pricing before you run it.
• Pick Higgsfield if you already pay for a Higgsfield plan and want its credits to work from your agent.
• Pick Replicate if you already have a Replicate account and token and want its model catalog in your client.
• Pick Runway if you work in Runway: its MCP generations are saved in your Runway library with the rest of your work.
• Pick Sume if you want an OAuth sign-in that starts read-only, with paid tools hidden until you turn Write on, and a cost preview through dry_run before a paid call. The same server also lists generate_video, tts_create, music_create, rmbg_create, and image_upscale_create (MCP overview). Sume's docs call hosted MCP its supported remote connector, though not the primary integration path today.

Is there a free image generation MCP?

Not among these five, for the images themselves. fal says its MCP server is free and you pay only for the model runs you trigger. Higgsfield spends plan credits and Runway spends Runway credits on each generation, and Replicate bills the compute time your runs use.

On Sume, paid tools such as generate_image need an idempotency_key, and dry_run=true previews the cost without submitting (MCP tools and gates). Can these servers use an image from my computer?

Not by file path. A hosted server runs on the vendor's machines, so the image has to reach it another way. fal's MCP has an upload_file tool that takes a public file URL or base64 data and puts it on fal's CDN.

Sume's hosted MCP cannot read files from your laptop. For Sume image references, pass a public HTTPS URL; localhost, private-network, and non-HTTPS URLs are rejected before submission (Image API).
