Runway MCP is Runway's remote MCP server at https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp, which lets ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, and other MCP apps generate images and video with Runway from inside the chat. You add it as a plugin or custom connector and sign in with your Runway account instead of an API key, and each generation uses your Runway credits.

How do I connect Runway MCP to Claude or Cursor?

Runway's FAQ lists ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Grok Bot, Cursor, Replit, and other apps that support MCP.

  • Claude.ai: add https://mcp.runwayml.com/mcp as a custom connector (Settings → Connectors); you'll be prompted to sign in with your Runway account. Runway's Dev guide notes that Claude Desktop uses the same custom connectors as Claude.ai.
  • Cursor: Runway's server page says to add the same URL as a custom connector; its FAQ says to add the Runway plugin in Cursor and sign in.
  • ChatGPT: go to chatgpt.com/plugins, search for Runway, click Install Plugin, then Sign in with Runway. Mention @Runway in a chat to use it.
  • Claude Code: Claude Code's own docs add any remote HTTP server with claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>, then /mcp to complete the OAuth sign-in in the browser.

Is Runway Dev MCP the same server?

No. Runway Dev at https://dev.runwayml.com/mcp connects Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or Codex to your Runway Developer Portal account to look up tasks, manage model routers, and read docs. Runway's guide calls it separate from the generation MCP, which creates media in chat. It is OAuth only, and the guide says not to put an API key in the MCP config. For Claude Code it gives:

How does a multi-model server such as Sume's compare?

Sume's hosted MCP server at https://mcp.sume.com/mcp is another remote option, documented for Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex. Sume basics says hosted MCP still works but is not the primary path today. What differs, per its MCP overview and Video API docs:

  • Sign-in: OAuth consent on the MCP host, read-only by default; turn Write on for paid tools such as generate_video. An API key header also works.
  • Models: generate_video takes a catalog id from video-router_models, or routes to sume/auto. In current code the catalog carries ids such as seedance-2.5 and kling-3, and no Runway model.
  • Billing: the workspace USD balance, reserved on submit at provider list × 1.25, plus a 5.5% agent fee by default. Rates are on API pricing.
  • Waiting: one jobs_wait call holds at most 55 seconds, so the agent waits in slices; see MCP tool call timeouts on long video jobs.
