Background remover API prices: 5 options compared
fal's list prices for five background removers, from $0.0008 per compute second to $0.018 per image, and how Sume's rmbg_create tool compares.
On fal's list, Rembg Enhance is $0.006 per image, Pixelcut $0.016 per image and Bria RMBG 2.0 $0.018 per image, while BiRefNet v2 and fal's Imageutils Rembg are billed per compute second. Sume's rmbg_create MCP tool is a paid hosted tool whose price you read from the catalog.
The price table
| Model | Listed price | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rembg Enhance | $0.006 | Per image | |
| BiRefNet v2 | $0.0008 | Per compute second | Cost depends on run time |
| fal Imageutils Rembg | $0.00111 | Per compute second | Cost depends on run time |
| Pixelcut | $0.016 | Per image | |
| Bria RMBG 2.0 | $0.018 | Per image | Licensed data only |
Per image versus per compute second
A per-image price is predictable. A per-compute-second price depends on how long the model runs for each file, so you need one measured run before you can budget a batch.
Sume's `rmbg_create`
The hosted MCP lists rmbg_create among paid tools; it needs an idempotency_key, and under OAuth the session needs write scope. The docs call it the cutout tool. I cannot quote its price from the pages I read, so read it from the catalog or a dry_run before comparing.
How to compare fairly
Run the same ten images through each option, count edge failures on hair and glass, and record the cost per file. A cheap result you redo twice is not cheap.
- Same ten images across all options
- Check transparent PNG output on a checkerboard
- Note whether the licence suits commercial work
- Record cost per accepted file, not per call
