A mug wrap design is a wide strip, so start from a wide ratio: 2:1 on Qwen Image, Flux 2 Pro, Recraft V4 or Grok Imagine, 3:1 on Ideogram V3 or Ideogram 4.5, 21:9 on Nano Banana 2, Qwen Image and Flux 2, and 20:9 on Grok Imagine. Prices run from $0.025 per image to $0.10 at the default size. Your print partner's template sets the exact proportions, so read it first and crop to it afterward.

Choose the closest ratio

The catalog lists the ratios each model accepts. A model only accepts the ratios its catalog descriptors list, so pick from its list. The table shows the wide ratios (read 2026-10-03).

Design for a surface that wraps

A wraparound pattern has to meet itself at the seam. Models do not tile on purpose, so the safest design is one with a calm edge: soft background on both ends, with the main subject centered or placed on one side. Ask for empty space on the left and right edges and no important detail within a tenth of either edge.

Prompt and request

This asks for a wide botanical pattern with calm edges. It uses Flux 2 Pro at 2:1 for $0.0375 per image and n of 4 so you can pick the best of four for $0.15.

Text on a mug

If you want a name or a saying on the mug, set it in your print software. OpenAI's image guide (read 2026-10-03) says its models can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity, and a misspelled word is hard to see until it is printed. Generate the artwork without letters and add the type yourself.

What Sume does not do

Sume does not know your template or its safe areas, and it does not send files to a print vendor. Place the download in your template, check the seam and the cut line, and export in the format your partner asks for.
