AI avatar news, October 8, 2026: what is worth acting on
Synthesia Sessions and plans, Tavus Griffin-Lite, HeyGen LiveAvatar, Teams and Zoom avatars: dated, with what a buyer can actually do this week.
The avatar news that changes a purchase this week: Synthesia launched Sessions and new plan credits on October 1, 2026; Tavus announced Griffin-Lite the same day but only for select testers; HeyGen's September release put an open-source live-avatar demo stack on GitHub on September 10. Microsoft Teams and Zoom pages describe meeting avatars. Only the Synthesia items can be bought this week.
Sume ships no live avatar. It ships a rendered, script-driven Avatar 1.0 video, so the table also says what each item means for that route.
The dated list
Each row below comes from the vendor's own page, read on 2026-10-08.
| Date listed | Vendor | What the page says | Can you buy it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2026 | Synthesia | Sessions: Roleplay and Survey live, Expert coming soon; 140+ languages, 230+ avatars | Roleplay and Survey, yes |
| October 1, 2026 | Synthesia | Plans: 60 one-time Interactive Avatar minutes on every plan; Pro 2x to 8x added; Creator renamed Pro | Yes |
| October 1, 2026 | Tavus | Griffin-Lite full-duplex preview; 0.43 s average on H100s | No, select testers only |
| September 10, 2026 | HeyGen | Two MIT-licensed live-avatar demo repositories | Code is public; needs a LiveAvatar API key |
| Undated | Microsoft | Teams avatars: 3 per account, mobile view-only | Yes, with admin setup |
| March to April 2026 as listed | Zoom | Avatars, deepfake detection, voice translator | Check your account |
What to act on
If you train sales or support staff, Synthesia's Roleplay Training at $29 per learner a month is the one new product with a price. If you build a conversational product, Griffin-Lite is a request-access form, not an API. The Tavus page says Griffin-Lite will not be available to customers at this time and expects a release after safety concerns are addressed.
HeyGen's repositories are worth reading if you plan a live avatar on top of an LLM; they need a LiveAvatar key, so they are not free to run.
What it means for Sume users
Nothing in the week changes Sume's catalog. Avatar 1.0 stays at $0.184, $0.245 and $0.55 a second for Standard, Plus and Max, 4 to 60 seconds a job, 720p. If you were waiting on a live product, you can ship the recorded part now: intro clips, step-by-step answers, scenario prompts. Add live later where the conversation is the point; the six questions help decide where.
