ElevenLabs-UMG vs Suno-Warner: licensed AI music models compared
ElevenLabs signed a multi-year deal with UMG on Sept 10; Suno shipped v6 on licensed data a day earlier. What each side has said and what is still unreleased.

The two deals are different kinds of thing. ElevenLabs announced a multi-year agreement with Universal Music Group on 2026-09-10, its first with a major label, covering licensing and product development for a music platform that is still in development. Suno shipped v6 on 2026-09-09, and TechCrunch reports it is trained on licensed music and that Sony and UMG suits remain active. One is a future product; the other is a shipped model.
Side by side
Facts from ElevenLabs' announcement page and from TechCrunch, as read on 2026-10-05.

What the ElevenLabs page does and does not say
The page describes the deal as the company's first with a major label and says a remix and mashup platform is in development. It also states that the existing Music API and ElevenMusic are separate from the UMG agreement. That last point matters for buyers: nothing in the announcement says the Music API's current output was trained or licensed under this deal, so do not assume the deal covers music you generate today.
ElevenLabs' changelog shows what the Music API did last: Music v2.5 API support on 2026-09-14, with composition chunks up to 6,132 characters. The changelog lists no October entries.
What TechCrunch says about Suno
According to TechCrunch, Suno's new models were not trained on the data used for earlier versions, the older models are to be retired, and the company added watermarking and tiered download limits. The licensed-data partners it names are Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe. The report also says suits from Sony and UMG are active. These points are press-reported; the vendors' own pages are not cited for them.
What it means for someone buying music generation
Neither development changes what you can safely ship by itself. A label deal is about the supplier's rights position; your own use still depends on the terms for your plan or API. Notice also that UMG appears on both sides of this comparison, as ElevenLabs' partner and as a party to suits against Suno according to the press report, so the labels are not a single bloc.
Sume does not ship ElevenLabs Music or Suno. Its Music 1.0 runs on Google's Lyria 3.5 at a fixed $0.125 per accepted generation. If licensing posture drives your choice, ask each supplier in writing what the model was trained on and what you may do with the output.
