YouTube targeted Shorts ads: 5 channels or fewer, 45% from Feb 2027
From Feb 1, 2027 YouTube says Shorts ads aimed at five or fewer channels can earn direct revenue; creators keep 45% of net. What brands need to build.

Starting February 1, 2027, Shorts ads targeted to specific channels in small groups of five or fewer channels will be eligible to earn direct revenue, and creators keep 45% of the net revenue from the specific ad. That is the wording on YouTube's Shorts monetization policies page, and it says these direct earnings are in addition to the Creator Pool, which distributes Shorts Feed revenue by overall views.
The page does not say how advertisers book such placements. What it does settle is the economics from the creator's side and the size of the audience group: five channels at most.
Two revenue lines for a Shorts creator
Keep the existing pool and the new targeted line apart when you plan.
| Line | How it is paid | Creator share |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Pool | Shorts Feed ad revenue pooled, split by engaged views | 45% of the allocation |
| Targeted Shorts ads (from 2027-02-01) | Ads targeted to 5 or fewer channels | 45% of the net revenue from that ad |
| YouTube Premium and Premium Lite | Share of subscription revenue for Shorts views | 45% of the allocated net revenue |
What a brand builds for a channel-targeted Shorts ad
The ad itself is an ordinary Shorts ad, so Google's asset specs page applies: upload the video to YouTube as public or unlisted, use a vertical sound-on asset, and keep it under 60 seconds because only the first 60 seconds of a longer ad play in the feed.
With Sume video trim you can cut one master into per-channel variants: each is a new MP4 for $0.02, and start plus duration control the exact window. A hook that mentions a channel's niche may do better when the audience is five channels, but that is a hypothesis to test, not a result.
Steps
- Cut a 45 to 55 second vertical master so the feed does not truncate the ending.
- Make one variant per target channel if the hook should differ.
- Upload each as public or unlisted and write the 40-character headline and 90-character description.
- Burn captions so the ad works muted, then check them against the feed UI.
- Treat the 2027-02-01 start date as the earliest date for earnings under this line.
Working notes
Plan the creative around the audience size rather than the placement. With five channels or fewer, the viewer overlap is high, so a repeated hook across several ads will be seen repeatedly by the same people. Vary the first three seconds, keep one clear call to action, and keep a plain version of each file. The aim is to have each variant ready to swap in without re-editing the whole master when a channel's context changes.
Caveat
The page says Shorts ads targeted this way are eligible to earn direct revenue from February 1, 2027. It does not describe booking, pricing or approval, and it may update the wording, so read the current page before you plan spend.
