Shorts originality update: AI video variants vs reuploads

YouTube is cutting reach for reposted clips with minimal edits. A clip generated from your own prompt is new footage; a recolor of an old one is not.

YouTube said on 2026-10-01 that its Shorts recommendations will favor original content and cut reach for channels that re-upload other creators' clips with little change. Per news coverage of the announcement, voice-over, minor technical edits and template-based bulk changes do not make a reused clip original. If you make AI video variants, the safe reading is: a variant should be new footage with your own idea, not a light edit of an old clip.

What counts as a new clip on Sume

Generating a clip from a prompt, a first-frame image you own or references you own creates new footage. Using video_url edit mode on Gemini Omni Flash, or swapping a person with Recast, changes an existing video, so the result is only as original as the source. Treat those as edits of the source.

Practical rules

This is about recommendations only; the coverage notes monetization remains under YouTube's existing reused-content policy.

  • Do not reupload third-party footage with a voice-over and call it yours.
  • Do not mass-produce template variants that differ only in a color or a caption.
  • Give each variant a different idea: a new hook, setting or story beat, not a new filter.
  • Keep records of the inputs you own for each clip.

Where AI video helps

Generation lets you shoot variations that would be costly to film: a new location, a new angle or product colorway, each with its own concept. Draft at 480p on Wan 3.0 or Seedance, keep the winners and render those at 1080p. Read YouTube's own pages for the policy text; this post only relays reported changes.
