Remixed Short after the source is deleted: muted or removed
If the original creator deletes or restricts a source, remixed audio is muted, set to unlisted and deleted in 30 days; video remixes are deleted. Plan for it.

If you remix a Short and the original creator later deletes or restricts the source, YouTube mutes remixed audio, sets the Short to unlisted and schedules it for deletion in 30 days. A video remix is deleted. That comes from YouTube's help page on remixed content, read 2026-10-02.
The practical point: a remix is on loan. If a Short matters to you, build it so it does not depend on a source you do not control.
What exactly happens to a remix when the source goes away?
The page separates audio from video.
| Remix type | Result |
|---|---|
| Remixed audio | Muted, set to Unlisted, and scheduled for deletion in 30 days |
| Remixed video | Deleted |
Can the original creator stop remixes in the first place?
Yes. The same page says creators can opt out through YouTube Studio by toggling the Shorts remixing setting. A source that opts out is not available to sample, and one that was sampled earlier and then restricted triggers the outcomes above.
Availability also depends on privacy settings and copyright claims, so a source you could sample last month may not be sampleable today.
How long do I have when audio is muted?
Thirty days is the window the page gives for remixed audio: the Short is muted, set to Unlisted, and scheduled for deletion in that time. The page does not say whether you are notified, whether the window can be extended, or whether re-sourcing the audio restores the Short. Do not assume any of the three.
Video remixes have no window on the page; they are deleted. If you track your own Shorts in a spreadsheet, add a column for "depends on someone else's clip" so that you know which ones to look at first when a source channel changes.
How do I keep a Short that depends on a source clip?
There are three honest options for a Short that would otherwise depend on a clip you do not control.
- Use your own footage as the source. A video you uploaded and opted in for sampling is yours to edit into a Short, per YouTube's "Edit into a Short" help page.
- Keep a finished file. Export or render the final cut and store it, so you can re-upload if a platform removes the original.
- Prefer licensed or self-made material over a sampled clip when the Short is part of a series you plan to keep.
What can Sume do to protect a Short I made?
Sume does not store anything on YouTube and does not see whether your remix survives. What it gives you is a durable file route for the parts you own. A video trim or Timeline 1.0 job returns a video_url for a new MP4 and never changes the source, so the master you cut from stays as it was.
If a remix gets deleted and the footage was yours, you can rebuild and re-upload it. If the removed part was a sampled clip from someone else, you cannot rebuild that part with Sume; you would swap in your own footage. Sume's routes accept only clips already in your workspace.
To rebuild a lost 45-second Short from your own source, trim again with the same range:
curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Idempotency-Key: rebuild-short-001" \
-d '{
"video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/episode.mp4",
"start": 90,
"end": 135,
"mode": "sync"
}'What should I check before publishing a remix?
Check whether the Short would still make sense if the sampled part were gone. If not, either replace the sampled part with your own footage or accept that the Short has a shelf life tied to someone else's channel.
