What is creative automation? Templates, data, and review
Creative automation makes marketing assets by running one template over changing data, with people approving results instead of building each one.

Creative automation is making marketing assets, such as ads, product images, and short videos, by running one fixed template over changing data (the product, the headline, the size, the language) instead of building each asset by hand. People design the template and approve the results; software produces the versions.
The idea is explained below in plain terms; this page is about marketing, not factory automation. The worked example uses Sume's Format catalog, Calling a Format, and Bulk runs docs, read on 2026-09-28.
What does creative automation mean in marketing?
A campaign rarely needs one ad. It needs the same idea for forty products, in three shapes, with four headlines, for two markets. Built by hand, that is hundreds of near-identical files. Creative automation splits the work in two: the parts that stay the same go into a template, and the parts that change go into a table of data, one row per asset.
Ad creative automation is the same idea applied to paid media: one layout or script, many variants for testing or for each placement. The variants multiply, so the count is the product of the things you vary, and so is the cost.
What does a creative automation pipeline look like?
Most setups have the same six parts:
- A template: the brand rules, the layout or the recipe, written once.
- A data source: a product feed, a spreadsheet, or a CMS, with one row per asset.
- A generator: the software that fills the template with each row. With AI, it can also make new images or motion, not only swap text.
- A budget limit, so a bad batch can't spend without end.
- A review step where a person approves, fixes, or rejects each result before it goes out.
- Delivery to wherever the asset is used: an ad account, a store, a folder.
What are creative automation tools?
They fall into three groups. Template tools fill fixed layouts from a feed, which works when every asset is the same design with different text and photos. Generative AI models make new pictures or clips from a prompt and reference images, so the output varies from run to run. Workflow tools connect the two to your data and your approval step; n8n human-in-the-loop approval shows one such review gate.
Because generated output varies, the review step matters more with AI than with fixed templates. Human in the loop AI agents covers where a person should approve.
How do I automate ad creative with Sume?
On Sume, the template is a Format: a saved recipe an agent applies to a run, so a production workflow can be one HTTP call instead of a prompt you maintain. What is a Sume Format? explains it in full. Each data row becomes the run's input, and a bulk request queues up to 100 rows at once.
| Pipeline part | Sume field | Documented rule |
|---|---|---|
| Template | {handle}/{slug} of a Format | Catalog Formats answer at the sume handle |
| Data row | input | A JSON object, at most 64 top-level keys and 2 MiB |
| Batch | items | 1–100 entries per bulk request |
| Parallel work | concurrency | 1–16 runs in flight at once |
| Budget limit | generation_spend_cap_usd | Per run, up to the platform maximum of $500 |
| Typed results for review | output_schema | output comes back in that JSON Schema's shape |
curl -sS -X POST "https://api.sume.com/v1/formats/acme/product-ad/bulk-runs" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Idempotency-Key: spring-launch-batch-1" \
-d '{
"concurrency": 3,
"items": [
{ "input": { "sku": "A-100", "headline": "Spring edit" }, "generation_spend_cap_usd": 20 },
{ "input": { "sku": "A-101", "headline": "Spring edit" }, "generation_spend_cap_usd": 20 }
]
}'What should stay manual?
Deciding what the template says, and approving what comes out. The automation checks shape, not taste:
- Count the failures yourself: a queue marked
completedmeans every item is terminal, not that all succeeded. Sume Format bulk runs covers tracking a queue. inputdoes not reach the structured output, so keep your SKU or row id on your side, keyed by the run id or yourIdempotency-Key.- Make no promise to stakeholders about results; automation changes how many versions you can review, not how they perform.
