WellSaid cost per download minute: Pro annual $0.18, Starter $0.95
WellSaid Starter monthly is $19 for 20 download minutes ($0.95 each) and Pro annual is $33 for 180 ($0.18). Sume TTS is about $0.04 a minute at 900 characters.

WellSaid caps the audio you can download each month, so its cost per minute is the plan price divided by the download minutes: $0.95 on Starter monthly, $0.50 on Starter annual, $0.272 on Pro monthly and $0.183 on Pro annual. Business is $160 per user on annual billing for 2,880 minutes a year, which is 240 a month and $0.667 a minute. Read 2026-10-03.
Sume's TTS charges $0.0475 per 1,000 characters. At an assumed 900 characters a minute (about 150 words at 6 characters each including spaces), that is $0.0428 a minute. The 900 is my assumption for speech at a normal pace, not a Sume figure.
The plans
WellSaid lists a free Trial with 3 download minutes a month and 10 minutes of generation and no commercial rights, Starter at $19 a month ($10 annual, $120 a year) with 20 download minutes a month, Pro at $49 ($33 annual, $396 a year) with 180 a month, and Business at $160 per user a month on annual billing with 2,880 minutes a year. Starter and Pro include unlimited generation and commercial rights, and the page says all plans have API access.
| Plan | Price per month | Download minutes per month | Dollars per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter monthly | $19 | 20 | $0.950 |
| Starter annual | $10 | 20 | $0.500 |
| Pro monthly | $49 | 180 | $0.272 |
| Pro annual | $33 | 180 | $0.183 |
| Business annual (per user) | $160 | 240 | $0.667 |
Download minutes versus generated minutes
The distinction matters. WellSaid lets Starter and Pro users generate without limit and only counts what you download, so you can rehearse a script freely and pay only for the final take. A per-character wallet bills every attempt. If you re-render a script four times to get it right, the Sume cost of a kept minute is four times the table value.
At four takes per kept minute, Sume costs $0.171 a kept minute at the assumed 900 characters, still below every WellSaid row.
When WellSaid is the better shape
The choice is not only price. WellSaid sells voice quality, sample rate (Pro goes to 48 kHz, Enterprise to 96 kHz), editing tools and an Adobe Express integration. Sume's TTS router takes text and returns audio over an API. If the voice itself is what you are buying, the table is the wrong test.
Limits
Read the licence and listen to a sample on both before you compare price.
- The 900 characters per minute figure is an assumption; your script's pace changes it.
- WellSaid's annual plans are billed yearly, so the monthly figure is the annual price divided by 12.
- Voice quality, rights and languages are not priced here.
