Video reach campaign: which video lengths to cut from one master

A Google Ads video reach campaign wants a 15 s, a 6 s and sometimes a 30 s horizontal cut, plus a vertical one. Google's compositions, and trims on Sume.

For Efficient reach, Google's recommended composition is one horizontal 15-second video, one horizontal 6-second video and one vertical video of 6 to 60 seconds. Non-skippable reach adds a horizontal 30-second video, and Target frequency uses the 15-second and 6-second horizontals. So one 30-second horizontal master, trimmed twice, plus one vertical cut covers all three.

The compositions come from Google's Video reach campaigns page, and the length bands from Create a Video reach campaign, both read 2026-10-03. The two pages describe the non-skippable subtype slightly differently, so check the one in your account.

Which formats does each reach subtype mix?

The overview page describes three subtypes.

What length bands does the setup page give?

When you create the campaign, Google states the length for each slot, and the 30-second slot has an orientation rule.

  • Vertical videos will not serve on in-feed inventory, per the overview page.
  • 30-second video assets must be horizontal; square or vertical assets will not run.
  • The page notes that video enhancements can create 9:16 versions with Google AI, played after a quality review.

How do I cut the set from one master on Sume?

Generate or edit one horizontal master of 16 to 30 seconds. The video router docs say seedance-2.5 accepts 4 to 30 seconds and wan-3.0 2 to 30 seconds, with the remaining catalog models capped at 15 seconds, so a 30-second master needs a pinned long-range model; read the model's capabilities for its aspect ratios before you rely on 16:9.

Then use video trim, which takes start and exactly one of end or duration and returns a new MP4, leaving the source untouched. The default precision is exact, a frame-accurate re-encode with audio kept as AAC. A trim costs $0.02 per job, and a mode of sync waits up to 30 seconds. Check duration_seconds in the result: the bumper limit is up to 6 seconds, and the standard slot runs 7 to 15.

import json, os, urllib.request

API = "https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim"
MASTER = "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/master-16x9-30s.mp4"

def trim(start, duration, key):
    body = json.dumps({"video_url": MASTER, "start": start,
                       "duration": duration, "mode": "sync"}).encode()
    req = urllib.request.Request(API, data=body, method="POST", headers={
        "Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["SUME_API_KEY"],
        "Content-Type": "application/json",
        "Idempotency-Key": key})
    with urllib.request.urlopen(req) as res:
        return json.load(res)

for name, start, duration in [("reach-15s", 0, 15), ("reach-06s", 2, 6)]:
    job = trim(start, duration, "reach-" + name)
    print(name, json.dumps(job)[:200])

What should the 6-second cut contain?

A bumper cannot be skipped and has no second chance, so it should not be the first 6 seconds of the long cut by default. Pick the strongest single beat: product, claim, brand, call to action. The start of 2 in the code above is only a placeholder for where that beat sits in your master.

The Efficient reach composition counts the vertical video separately, and Google says vertical videos will not serve on in-feed inventory, so a vertical cut does not replace the horizontal 15-second one. Treat each subtype as a checklist of files and tick them off: horizontal 15 s, horizontal 6 s, vertical 6 to 60 s, and for CTV a horizontal 30 s.

The vertical 6 to 60 second slot is its own file. Generate it natively at 9:16 or take it from a vertical master rather than cropping the landscape master, because a landscape-to-vertical crop keeps a narrow slice of the frame.

What stays outside Sume?

All of these cuts still have to be uploaded to YouTube before a campaign can use them; see the upload rule. Sume does not set up the campaign, pick subtypes or judge which composition wins.
