Overlay an image on a silent video: compose warns, keeps audio
A silent video in Sume Timeline compose is a compose_video_has_no_audio warning, not a failure. Audio passes through when present; Timeline supplies it later.

A mute video in Sume's compose does not fail. It warns compose_video_has_no_audio and the clip still renders. Audio passes through from the video when it has any; when it has none, the Timeline 1.0 spine supplies the audio at assemble time.
This is from the Timeline compose docs, read 2026-10-01. Runway's changelog covers its editor panel; this page is about what the compose API does with sound.
What happens to the audio?
Compose takes no audio inputs; it takes the video layer's track as it is.
| Source video | Result |
|---|---|
| Has audio | Audio passes through from the video |
| Mute | Warning compose_video_has_no_audio; job still succeeds |
Is the warning something to fix?
Only if you expected sound. A silent product loop is a normal input; the warning tells you the shot has no audio of its own, and nothing else.
Where does the audio come from then?
Drop the composed MP4 into Timeline 1.0 video[]. The docs say the spine supplies the audio at assemble time, so a voiceover or soundtrack goes on the render, not on the compose. See silent video and audio mode.
How do I see the warning?
The docs do not say where the warning is surfaced, so check the job envelope. Poll it, because there is no GET /v1/timeline-1.0/compose/:id; the result carries video_url and duration_seconds.

- Change frame rate when compositing: output_fps_resamples_sources
Sume Timeline compose defaults to the video layer's own frame rate. Set output.fps to a different rate and it warns output_fps_resamples_sources.
- Add an image over a video: position, width_ratio, margin_ratio
Sume Timeline compose overlay places a still with position top, center or bottom, width_ratio 0.05 to 1 (default 0.9) and margin_ratio 0 to 0.45 (default 0.05).
- Fade out music at the end of a video: two fades, two caps
In Timeline 1.0, soundtrack.fade_out_seconds fades only the music bed (max 10 s). output.fade_out_seconds fades the whole render (0 to 5 s). Which to use.
- Crossfade longer than 1 second: the Timeline transition limit
Timeline 1.0 transitions are capped at 1 second and 50 percent of the shorter neighbouring clip. Longer ones return transition_too_long. What to do instead.
