Synthesia vs Runway is presenter video against generative video. Synthesia turns a script into an avatar presenter video, in 160+ languages and voices, with dubbing, SCORM export on Enterprise and API access from its Creator plan. Runway sells generative video models, and its developer API adds avatars built from one image: live conversations, or a rendered clip of the avatar speaking your audio or text.

The Synthesia facts come from its pricing and Video API pages; the Runway facts from its pricing, API pricing, API reference and Characters pages, all read on 2026-09-29. It compares jobs and billing, not output quality.

How do Synthesia and Runway compare by job?

Split the work into presenter clips, localization and generated footage; each vendor covers these to a different degree.

From Synthesia's pricing page and Runway's pricing, API pricing, API reference and Characters pages, read 2026-09-29. Synthesia prices are for monthly billing.

Can Runway replace Synthesia for training videos?

For a short talking clip, Runway's API can render one: POST /v1/avatar_videos with the gwm1_avatars model, an avatar, and speech as audio or text. The pages read don't list a SCORM export, a dubbing workflow with lip sync, or a per-video length limit for that endpoint, so a course that needs those would need other tools. Synthesia lists SCORM export "with all translated versions" on Enterprise, and its Video API needs a Creator plan or above.

Runway's Characters are a different job: real-time conversations over WebRTC, which its docs pitch for learning and development as "interactive tutors and coaches". Synthesia's closest item is its Roleplay sessions. Real-time AI avatar vs video avatar API explains the difference.

How are Synthesia and Runway billed?

Synthesia bills through plan credits: Starter is $29 a month and Creator $89, API video comes out of the plan's usage limits, and it sells subscriptions only, with no pay-per-video option. Runway's API bills prepaid credits at $0.01 each, at a rate set per model, such as gen4.5 at 12 credits a second. Runway Characters API covers the avatar rates, including the missing rate for rendered avatar videos, so price a test clip before a volume run.

What about HeyGen vs Synthesia vs Runway?

HeyGen sits on the presenter side with Synthesia: its pricing page lists stock, photo and custom video avatars. HeyGen vs Synthesia compares those two; Runway is the generative-video option of the three.

Where does Sume fit?

Sume's POST /v1/avatar-1.0/talking-video renders short scripted avatar clips: an estimated 4–60 seconds, 720p as the documented resolution, at $0.184/s standard, $0.245/s plus, $0.55/s max (no product image) (Generate avatar video). It speaks English only in current code. For another language, the route is TTS in that language, then VEED Fabric 1.0 on a still or avatar at $0.1875 per audio second (720p) (Sume API reference). Both add a 5.5% agent fee by default.
