Shopify allows 250 media per product: how many AI images to plan?

Shopify caps a product at 250 images, 3D models or videos, and variants take one image each from that gallery. How to budget AI shots per product.

What is Shopify's media limit per product?

250. Shopify's add media page says you can add a maximum of 250 images, 3D models, or videos to a product (read 2026-10-03). That is a ceiling for the whole gallery, not a target, and it counts every media type together.

Variants draw from the same pool. The variant images page says a variant supports only one image, assigned from the product's images, and that variants do not support videos or 3D models. The developer docs add that variants reference existing product media. A variant image is therefore not extra; it is one of the gallery items.

How should I split the gallery?

Think in slots rather than a count. The first media item is the featured media, one image per variant is assigned from the gallery, and the rest are supporting views. A product with 12 variants needs at least 12 images for variants plus a featured image that may or may not be one of them.

The cap is rarely the problem. The cost of a bloated gallery is review time and a slow page, so the useful number is how many you can check against the real product.

Gallery slots from Shopify's Help Center and shopify.dev pages (read 2026-10-03); the plan column is an example, not a Shopify rule.

How do I generate that on Sume?

The Image API takes n from 1 to 10 per call, but the per-model ceiling is lower, so read the n range descriptor from GET /v1/images/models first. With a ceiling of 4, the example's 17 images is 5 calls (17 / 4 = 4.25, rounded up). Slow or large requests can come back as 202 with a job to poll, so check the status code instead of assuming a body shape.

For a whole catalog, run one product per request group, name results by product and slot, and import in order so the featured image is first. Failed generations are not billed, so retrying a single slot is safe.

What can go wrong?

Two things: a 13th color arrives and the variant has no image to point at, or reordering puts a supporting view first and changes the collection thumbnail. Keep a manifest per product of slot to file, and re-check the featured image after every reorder.

Shopify's image limits are covered separately in Shopify product image size; this post is only about how many items to plan.
